Our verdict on the Hector Tomahawk PHEV
The Hector Tomahawk PHEV answers a real problem for Indian buyers: it can run as an electric car for daily commutes and as a petrol car for long trips. A large 20.5 kWh battery and a seven-seat cabin make it more practical than most hybrids at this price. The catches are that it is new, deliveries only begin in November 2026, and several key figures, including the electric range, still await final certification. It also costs about ₹4 lakh more than the all-electric Tomahawk in the same trim. If you can charge at home and also travel long distances often, it is worth considering. If you rarely leave the city, the EV is cheaper and simpler. Wait for the first road tests and real-world efficiency figures before committing.
Good things
- Can run on electricity alone for most daily commutes
- No range worries on long trips thanks to the petrol engine
- Seven seats and a long 2,810 mm wheelbase
- Well equipped, with 6 airbags, ESC and a 360-degree camera on both versions
Could be better
- Only 192 litres of boot with all seats in use
- Several figures still await final certification
- Costs more than the electric Hector Tomahawk
- Level 2 ADAS only on the top Essence

MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV: an electric commuter with a petrol back-up
The Hector Tomahawk PHEV shares its body, platform and cabin with the electric Hector Tomahawk, but swaps the large battery for a 20.5 kWh pack and a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. The electric motor makes 201 PS and 237 Nm; the engine makes 102 PS and 125 Nm and can either charge the battery or drive the wheels, switching between modes through MG's dedicated hybrid transmission.
MG claims more than 115 km on battery power, and over 1,100 km with a full 52-litre tank and a full battery. A 3.3 kW AC charger and installation come with the car, taking about 7.5 hours from 10 to 100 per cent. It also accepts 25 kW DC charging, which MG says takes it from 30 to 80 per cent in about 35 minutes. If the battery runs low, the car carries on as a regular hybrid.
It is sold only as a seven-seater, in Exclusive and Essence versions. Both get 6 airbags, stability control, a 360-degree camera, a panoramic sunroof and ventilated front seats. The Essence adds Level 2 ADAS, a 15.6-inch screen, Infinity audio and vehicle-to-load power.
PHEV or the Hector Tomahawk EV?
If you have reliable home or office charging and mostly drive in and around the city, the EV is cheaper to buy and simpler. If you regularly drive long distances or cannot always charge, the PHEV removes range anxiety while still letting you commute on electricity.
Do I have to charge it?
No, it will run as a self-charging hybrid. But you will only see the low running costs if you plug it in regularly, ideally every night. Without charging, you are carrying a heavy battery around for little benefit.
Is it practical for seven people?
Seating is fine for seven on shorter trips, but with all three rows in use the boot holds only 192 litres. Fold the third row and it grows to 528 litres, which suits a family of five with luggage.
Should I wait before buying?
We would. Deliveries start in November 2026 and the final range certification is pending. Waiting for first owner and road-test feedback on real-world efficiency costs little and could save you from early issues.
