Our verdict on the XEV 9e

The XEV 9e offers a lot for the money: a large, well-equipped cabin, a genuinely big boot plus a front boot, and long claimed range. Six airbags, ESC and four disc brakes are standard, and ADAS arrives from the second trim. The sloping roof eats into rear headroom compared with a boxy SUV, so tall rear passengers should try it first. The top Pack Three and Cineluxe cost over ₹29 lakh before a charger, where the extras are mostly comfort and gadgets. For most buyers the Pack Two 79 kWh hits the right balance. If you need seven seats, look at the XEV 9S instead.

Mahindra XEV 9e: space, range and gadgets in one package

The XEV 9e is a five-seat electric coupe-SUV on Mahindra's INGLO platform. It is 4,789 mm long with a 2,775 mm wheelbase and 207 mm of ground clearance. Its 663-litre boot and 150-litre front boot make it one of the most practical electric SUVs in its price range, despite the sloping roofline. It seats five, with a 60:40 split rear seat that reclines.

There are two batteries. The 59 kWh pack drives a 170 kW rear motor with a claimed range of 522 km. The 79 kWh pack has a 210 kW motor and a claimed 656 km. Both produce 380 Nm and drive the rear wheels. Mahindra quotes about 20 minutes for a 20 to 80 percent DC fast charge on a suitable charger. Pack One rides on passive dampers, while Pack Three versions get adaptive suspension.

Prices start at ₹21.90 lakh ex-showroom for the Pack One 59 kWh and go up to ₹30.50 lakh for the Pack Three 79 kWh. The Cineluxe at ₹29.35 lakh adds satin paints and premium cabin touches. Wall chargers cost ₹60,000 or ₹75,000 extra. The battery carries a lifetime warranty for the first private owner, under Mahindra's conditions.

59 kWh or 79 kWh?

If most of your driving is in the city, the 59 kWh is enough. If you travel between cities regularly, the 79 kWh adds about 130 km of claimed range and more power for ₹1.6 lakh on the Pack Two. It also charges at a higher DC rate on the Pack Three.

Is the Cineluxe worth it?

Only if you like its satin paints and cabin finish. Mechanically it uses the 79 kWh battery and 210 kW motor, like the Pack Three. Compare the feature lists carefully; for most buyers the Pack Two 79 kWh delivers the important parts for less.

XEV 9e or XEV 9S?

The XEV 9e is a five-seater with a coupe roof and a larger boot. The XEV 9S is a boxier three-row SUV with six or seven seats. Choose the 9S if you regularly carry more than five people; otherwise the 9e is the sleeker choice.

How practical is it day to day?

Very, for a coupe-SUV. The boot is large, the frunk holds charging cables and small bags, and the cabin is wide. The car is long and wide, though, so parking in tight spaces needs care. The 360-degree camera from Pack Three Select helps.
