Jeep Compass
Jeep's smallest SUV in India, now sold only with a 2.0-litre diesel. It suits buyers who want a solid, well-built five-seater that rides well on bad roads and can be had with real four-wheel drive, and who can live with a dated cabin and a high price for the size.

Our verdict on the Compass
The Compass is a good car to drive and a hard one to price. The diesel is strong, the suspension soaks up broken roads and the body feels tough. But the cabin and screen layout are showing their age, there is no petrol or hybrid, and the rear seat is tighter than a Hyundai Tucson or a Mahindra XUV700 that cost the same or less. Jeep keeps adding special editions rather than real updates. We would buy one only if the 4x4 matters to you or a dealer offers a big discount; otherwise, a Tucson diesel or a Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line gives you more car for the money.
Good things
- Strong 2.0 diesel and a well-matched 9-speed automatic
- Rides broken roads with real composure
- Proper 4x4 with terrain modes on the top automatics
- Feels solidly built, with 6 airbags and ESC standard
Could be better
- Expensive for a five-seater of this size
- Rear seat and boot are smaller than rivals at the same price
- No petrol, hybrid or electric option
- Cabin design and features feel dated against newer rivals

Jeep Compass: a tough diesel SUV that charges for its badge
The Compass has been made in India since 2017 and is now sold only with a 2.0-litre Multijet diesel. It makes 168 bhp and 350 Nm, and every version gets the same engine. Manual cars use a 6-speed gearbox; automatics get a 9-speed torque converter. Most versions drive the front wheels only. The 4x4 is kept for the top Model S (O) and Track Edition automatics.
Prices start at ₹17.99 lakh for the Sport and climb past ₹30 lakh for the 4x4 automatics. Between them sit the Longitude (O), Limited (O) and Model S (O) trims, plus a rotating cast of special editions such as the Trail, Track and 85th Anniversary. These editions mostly add decals, wheels and trim colours rather than new hardware.
On the road the Compass feels dense and planted, and it handles bad surfaces better than most rivals. The trade-off is space. At 4.4 m long it is smaller than many cheaper SUVs, and the rear seat and 438-litre boot show it. Every version gets 6 airbags and stability control, and the 178 mm ground clearance copes with rough tracks.
Do I need the 4x4 version?
Only if you drive on loose trails, sand or snow often. The 4x4 automatics cost about ₹2 lakh more than the front-wheel-drive Model S (O) automatic and claim 14.9 km/l against 17.1 km/l. For city and highway use, the front-wheel-drive automatic is enough.
Are the special editions worth buying?
They are cosmetic packs. The Trail Edition is based on the Longitude (O) and the Track and 85th Anniversary Editions on the Model S (O). Pay the small premium only if you like the look; the engine, gearbox and safety kit are the same.
Is there a petrol Compass?
No. Jeep dropped the 1.4 turbo petrol in 2023, so every Compass sold today is a 2.0 diesel. If you drive less than about 1,000 km a month, a petrol rival may cost less to own.
What should I compare it with?
The Hyundai Tucson and Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line are roomier and more modern inside. The Mahindra XUV700 and Tata Harrier offer more space and features for less. The Compass wins on ride, build and genuine off-road ability.
