Jeep Grand Cherokee
Jeep's flagship in India: a five-seat luxury SUV assembled locally, with a 2.0 turbo petrol, an 8-speed automatic and permanent four-wheel drive. It suits buyers who want a big, well-equipped and quietly capable SUV without a German badge, and who can live with patchy dealer reach and soft resale.

Our verdict on the Grand Cherokee
The Grand Cherokee is a comfortable, well-equipped SUV with more off-road ability than most luxury rivals, and since the 2025 GST cut it is much better value than it was. The cabin is roomy for five, the tech is generous and the four-wheel drive is permanent. The weak points are the engine and the badge. A 2.0 petrol in a car this big is adequate rather than effortless and will not be frugal, and resale and service reach trail BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz. If you want the most car for ₹63 lakh and will use the 4x4, it is worth a look. If you want a stronger engine, better resale and wider service, a BMW X3 or Audi Q5 is the safer buy.
Good things
- Long equipment list, including passenger screen and head-up display
- Permanent four-wheel drive with terrain modes
- Roomy, comfortable five-seat cabin
- Priced well below German rivals of similar size
Could be better
- 2.0 petrol feels stretched in a car this heavy
- Fuel efficiency not officially published
- Smaller dealer and service network than German brands
- Weak resale compared with BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz

Jeep Grand Cherokee: a big luxury SUV that undercuts the Germans
The Grand Cherokee sold in India is the current-generation, five-seat model, assembled at Jeep's Ranjangaon plant. It comes with one engine, a 2.0-litre turbo petrol rated by Jeep at 268 hp, with 400 Nm, paired with an 8-speed automatic and Quadra-Trac I permanent four-wheel drive. Selec-Terrain modes let you set it up for sand, mud or snow.
There is one regular version, the Limited (O) at ₹63 lakh, which is well equipped: a 10.1-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen, a separate screen for the front passenger, a full-colour head-up display, a digital rear-view mirror and a dual-pane sunroof. The Signature Edition adds motorised side steps, two 11.6-inch rear screens and front and rear dash cameras for about ₹85,000 more.
At 4,914 mm long and 1,979 mm wide it is a big car with plenty of room for five, though there is no third row. The trade-off for the price is the engine: it is smooth but has to work hard, and Jeep does not publish an official fuel efficiency figure. The 87-litre tank at least gives a long range between fills, and every version gets the same engine, gearbox and four-wheel-drive hardware.
Is a 2.0 petrol enough for this car?
For relaxed driving, yes. It pulls cleanly and the 8-speed gearbox keeps it in its torque band. Overtaking with a full load needs planning, and fuel use will be high in town. There is no diesel or hybrid in India.
How capable is it off-road?
More than most luxury SUVs. The permanent four-wheel drive and Selec-Terrain modes handle sand, mud and broken tracks well. It is not a Wrangler, so avoid serious rock crawling.
What about servicing and resale?
Jeep's network is concentrated in larger cities, so check how far your nearest workshop is. Resale tends to be weaker than for BMW, Audi or Mercedes-Benz, which narrows its price advantage over time.
What should I compare it with?
The BMW X3 and Audi Q5 cost a little more and offer stronger brand support and resale. The Volvo XC60 is calmer and well equipped. The Grand Cherokee wins on size, equipment and real four-wheel-drive ability.
