Jeep Wrangler
The real off-roader of Jeep's Indian range: a body-on-frame, five-door Wrangler with a 2.0 turbo petrol and permanent four-wheel drive. It suits buyers who will use its off-road ability or simply want the icon, and who accept a firm, noisy, thirsty car for the price of a luxury SUV.

Our verdict on the Wrangler
The Wrangler is a specialist, and it is very good at its speciality. Off the road it will go places almost nothing else on sale in India can, and it carries real character and strong resale. On the road it is a compromise: the ride is busy, wind and tyre noise are high, the boot is small and you will see about 10 km/l at best. At ₹67.70 lakh to ₹72.80 lakh you could buy a well-equipped luxury SUV that is far more comfortable, or a Toyota Fortuner and keep a lot of change. Buy a Wrangler if you will use it off-road or simply want one; if you just want a tough-looking SUV, a Mahindra Thar Roxx does much the same job for a fraction of the money.
Good things
- Genuine off-road ability, especially in Rubicon form
- Iconic design with removable roof and doors
- Strong 2.0 turbo petrol and smooth 8-speed automatic
- Holds its value well
Could be better
- Firm ride and high cabin noise on the highway
- Expensive for the space and comfort on offer
- Thirsty, and no diesel option
- Small boot and Jeep publishes no full spec sheet

Jeep Wrangler: the original off-roader at a luxury-car price
The Wrangler sold in India is the five-door Unlimited body of the JL generation, assembled locally from kits. Every version uses a 2.0-litre turbo petrol with 400 Nm, an 8-speed automatic and four-wheel drive. The current version has a 12.3-inch touchscreen, Level 2 driver assists and side curtain airbags across the range.
There are two regular versions. The Unlimited, at ₹67.70 lakh, uses full-time four-wheel drive and 18-inch wheels. The Rubicon, at ₹72.30 lakh, adds the Rock-Trac system, a heavy-duty Dana 44HD full-float rear axle, an off-road camera and smaller wheels with chunkier tyres. The Willys '41 edition, at ₹72.80 lakh, is a Rubicon with heritage paint, decals and motorised side steps.
Day to day the Wrangler is less polished than a luxury SUV of the same price. The ride is firm, the cabin is noisy at speed and claimed efficiency is only 10.6 to 11.4 km/l. What you get in return is 237 mm of ground clearance, a ladder frame and solid axles, and a roof and doors that come off for open-air driving.
Unlimited or Rubicon?
Buy the Rubicon if you plan serious trails, rocks or deep ruts; its axle and 4x4 system are built for that. If the car will mostly live on tarmac with the odd beach or hill track, the Unlimited is enough and costs ₹4.6 lakh less.
Can it be a daily car?
Yes, but with compromises. It is tall, wide and has a large turning circle in tight streets, the ride is busy, and highway noise is high. Many owners use it as a second car for weekends.
What will it cost to run?
Real-world economy from the petrol engine will be below the claimed 10.6 to 11.4 km/l, especially in traffic or off-road. Service is limited to Jeep dealers in larger cities, so check how far your nearest workshop is before you buy.
What else should I consider?
The Land Rover Defender is far more comfortable and similarly capable but costs a good deal more. The Toyota Fortuner Legender is cheaper and easier to live with. The Mahindra Thar Roxx gives you the look and decent ability for a fraction of the price.
