Our verdict on the XC60
The XC60 is one of the easiest luxury SUVs to recommend. It rides comfortably, the cabin is calm and well made, and it comes with almost everything as standard, so the price you see is close to the car you get. The 250 hp mild-hybrid petrol is smooth and quick enough, though a claimed 12.9 km/l means fuel bills will be higher than a diesel or full hybrid. There is no diesel or plug-in option in India. Against the Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW X3 and Audi Q5, the Volvo is less sporty and its dealer network is smaller, but it often costs less once equipment is matched. Prices are indicative ex-showroom.
Good things
- Fully loaded single version keeps buying simple
- Comfortable ride and quiet, well-finished cabin
- Strong safety and driver-assist package as standard
- Practical 483-litre boot with a flat floor
Could be better
- Petrol only, with a claimed 12.9 km/l
- Volvo does not publish ground clearance for India
- Smaller dealer network than Mercedes-Benz or BMW
- Not as sharp to drive as a BMW X3

Volvo XC60: the fully loaded, no-options luxury SUV
The XC60 sits between the electric EX30 and EC40 and the bigger XC90 in Volvo’s India range. It is 4,708 mm long with a 2,865 mm wheelbase, so it competes with the Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW X3, Audi Q5 and Lexus NX. Volvo sells it in a single Ultra trim, so there are no packs or options to compare.
The B5 engine is a 2.0-litre turbo petrol with a 48V mild-hybrid system. It makes 250 hp and 360 Nm, drives all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic, and Volvo claims 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds. The claimed fuel use is 7.75 litres per 100 km, about 12.9 km/l, and the tank holds 71 litres.
Standard equipment includes a panoramic sunroof, Bowers & Wilkins audio, an 11.2-inch touchscreen with Google built-in, a 12.3-inch driver display, head-up display, wireless charging, an air purifier, a 360-degree camera and a full set of driver aids including blind-spot steering support and oncoming lane mitigation.
Is the XC60 good value against German rivals?
Often, yes. The XC60 comes with features that cost extra or need a higher trim on some rivals, such as the Bowers & Wilkins audio and head-up display. Compare on-road prices with matching equipment, and factor in that Volvo has fewer service centres than Mercedes-Benz or BMW.
How economical is the mild-hybrid petrol?
Volvo claims about 12.9 km/l. The mild-hybrid system helps with smooth stop-start and a little efficiency, but it cannot drive on electric power alone. If you drive long distances every month, a full hybrid such as the Lexus NX will cost less to fuel.
Is the XC60 safe?
Safety is a Volvo strength. Every XC60 gets automatic emergency braking for cars, pedestrians and cyclists, blind-spot steering support, oncoming lane mitigation, cross-traffic alert with auto braking and a 360-degree camera. These aids support the driver but do not replace careful driving.
