Lexus NX
Lexus’s smallest SUV in India, sold only as a self-charging petrol hybrid with all-wheel drive. It suits buyers who want a quiet, well-built luxury SUV that uses noticeably less fuel in city traffic than its turbo-petrol and diesel German rivals, and who value long warranty cover over outright pace.

Our verdict on the NX
The NX is a sensible luxury SUV rather than an exciting one. The hybrid system is smooth and quiet, and in city driving it will use far less fuel than a turbo-petrol German SUV of this size. Build quality and the long warranty are real strengths, and Lexus dealers have a good name for service. The catch is value at the bottom of the range: the Exquisite costs close to ₹68 lakh yet goes without a 360-degree camera or wireless charging. We would skip it and buy the Overtrail, which costs a little more and fixes those gaps. If you want a stronger engine, a bigger dealer network or better resale, test-drive the Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW X3 and Volvo XC60 before you sign. Prices are indicative ex-showroom.
Good things
- Hybrid system is smooth, quiet and frugal in stop-start traffic
- Every version gets all-wheel drive, a panoramic sunroof and ventilated front seats
- Long 8-year vehicle and hybrid battery warranty
- Overtrail adds more ground clearance and taller tyres for broken roads
Could be better
- Base Exquisite lacks a 360-degree camera and wireless charging at nearly ₹68 lakh
- The e-CVT gets noisy when you accelerate hard on the highway
- Lexus has far fewer showrooms and workshops in India than Mercedes-Benz or BMW
- F SPORT loses the power-folding rear seat that cheaper versions get

Lexus NX: the quiet hybrid in a turbo-heavy segment
The NX sits below the RX as the entry point to Lexus SUVs in India. It is about 4.66 metres long with a 2,690 mm wheelbase, so it sits in the same class as the Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW X3, Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60. Unlike most of those, it is offered only as a petrol hybrid, with no diesel or plug-in option.
Power comes from a 2.5-litre petrol engine paired with two electric motors, one at each axle, so every NX has all-wheel drive. Lexus quotes 176 kW combined, about 239 PS, and a claimed 20.26 km/l. The gearbox is an e-CVT. It does its best work at city speeds, where the car can run on electric power for short stretches and the engine stays quiet.
All versions share the engine, the 14-inch touchscreen, the panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, a head-up display, eight airbags and Lexus Safety System+ 3 driver aids. The differences are in wheels, upholstery, audio, cameras and suspension. The Overtrail has a raised ride on 18-inch wheels, the Luxury switches to leather and wood, and the F SPORT has firmer tuning and sports seats.
Is the base Exquisite worth buying?
Only if budget is tight. It has the same hybrid, safety kit and sunroof as the dearer versions, but it gets a 10-speaker system instead of the Mark Levinson setup and goes without the 360-degree camera and wireless charger. The Overtrail adds all of these for ₹3.86 lakh more, which we think is money well spent at this price.
How does the hybrid compare with a diesel rival?
In city traffic the NX should match or beat a diesel on fuel, because it can creep and cruise on battery power. On long highway runs a diesel will usually be more economical and feel stronger when overtaking. If most of your driving is urban, the hybrid makes more sense. If you cover long highway distances every week, a diesel GLC or X3 may suit you better.
Can the NX handle bad roads?
The regular versions run on 20-inch wheels with low-profile tyres, so take broken roads slowly. Third-party sites list about 195 mm of ground clearance. The Overtrail is the one to choose if you drive on rough roads often: it sits higher and uses 18-inch wheels with taller tyres, which cope better with potholes and speed breakers.
What are ownership costs like?
Lexus gives an 8-year or 2,00,000 km vehicle warranty and an 8-year hybrid battery warranty, and sells prepaid service packages. Hybrid brakes tend to wear slowly. The main drawback is reach: Lexus has only a small number of dealers, mostly in big cities, so check how far your nearest workshop is before you buy.
