Our verdict on the LX
The LX is a Land Cruiser at heart, and that is its main appeal: a tough, ladder-frame SUV with a strong diesel, proper low-range four-wheel drive and a reputation for lasting decades. The cabin is plush and well equipped, with massage seats, rear screens and a 25-speaker sound system. It is not the most modern-feeling car at nearly ₹3 crore. A Range Rover rides better on the road, has a more lavish cabin and a wider dealer network, though it is less proven over rough terrain. Lexus also publishes no mileage or ground clearance figure for India. If you want a luxury SUV that you can take far off the road and keep for a long time, the LX Overtrail is the one to buy. Prices are indicative ex-showroom.

Lexus LX: a luxury SUV built on a Land Cruiser frame
The LX is the biggest and most expensive Lexus SUV sold in India. It shares its ladder-frame platform with the Toyota Land Cruiser, measures 5,100 mm long and 1,990 mm wide, and has a 2,850 mm wheelbase. In India it comes only with five seats and one engine, the LX 500d diesel.
The 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 diesel makes 227 kW, about 309 PS, and 700 Nm from 1,600 rpm. It drives all four wheels through a 10-speed automatic, with a low-range transfer case, crawl control and multi-terrain select. Active height control air suspension lets you raise the body for rough ground.
The Urban has 22-inch forged wheels and the more road-focused look. The Overtrail adds locking front and rear differentials, 18-inch wheels with taller tyres, black exterior trim and its own Moon Desert paint. Both get heated and ventilated seats front and rear, front massage, rear entertainment screens and Lexus Safety System+ 3.
Urban or Overtrail: which LX should I buy?
The Overtrail, unless you never leave tarmac. It costs only ₹1.17 lakh more and adds locking differentials, plus 18-inch wheels with taller tyres that ride over potholes better and are cheaper to replace. The Urban suits buyers who want the bigger wheels and the wider choice of paint.
LX or Range Rover?
The Range Rover is more refined on the road, roomier in the back in long-wheelbase form and has a more luxurious cabin. The LX is tougher, uses a proven Toyota platform and should be more dependable over many years and rough use. Choose based on how much off-road driving you really do.
What will it cost to run?
A large, heavy SUV with a V6 diesel will use a lot of fuel, and Lexus gives no India mileage figure. Large tyres are expensive to replace, especially the 22-inch set on the Urban. Lexus’s long warranty and service packages help, but plan around the small number of Lexus workshops.
