Lexus ES

Lexus’s executive sedan in India, now in a larger new generation that is assembled locally as the ES 350h hybrid and also sold as the ES 500e electric. It suits buyers who are driven more than they drive, want a quiet and frugal car for city traffic, and value a long warranty over sporty handling.

Our pick at each price
  • Luxury₹71.80 lakh

The hybrid Luxury is the one we would buy. For ₹5.70 lakh over the Exquisite it adds heated and cooled front seats, Mark Levinson audio, a 360-degree camera, head-up display and wireless charging, all things you expect at this price.

  • Exquisite₹66.10 lakh

Only if budget is fixed. It has the same hybrid, safety aids and cabin space, but the front seats are neither heated nor cooled and it goes without a 360-degree camera, which is a real miss on a car over 5 metres long.

Our verdict on the ES

The new ES does what an ES should: it is quiet, smooth and very roomy in the back, and the hybrid should be cheap to run in city traffic. Local assembly keeps the hybrid priced well below German rivals. We would pick the hybrid Luxury, because the Exquisite leaves out too much for ₹66 lakh. The ES 500e is harder to recommend. It costs about ₹19 lakh more than the hybrid Luxury, and the hybrid already delivers low running costs without any charging worries. Buy the electric only if you can charge at home and want the quicker, all-wheel-drive car. If you drive yourself and enjoy it, test the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class too. Prices are indicative ex-showroom.

Good things

  • Long wheelbase gives a spacious, comfortable rear seat
  • Hybrid is smooth and frugal in stop-start traffic
  • 8-year vehicle and hybrid battery warranty
  • Locally assembled hybrid undercuts German long-wheelbase sedans

Could be better

  • Base Exquisite has no ventilated seats or 360-degree camera at ₹66 lakh
  • ES 500e costs about ₹19 lakh more than the equivalent hybrid
  • Lexus has a small dealer network, mostly in big cities
  • Boot and fuel tank sizes are not published for India

Lexus ES: a bigger chauffeur sedan, now with a plug option

The ES is Lexus’s answer to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5 Series, and in India it has always been bought mostly by people who sit in the back. The new generation is longer, wider and taller than the old car, with a 2,950 mm wheelbase. Lexus says it also rides 20 mm higher in India than elsewhere, to deal with speed breakers and broken roads.

The ES 350h uses a 2.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and an e-CVT, driving the front wheels. It never needs plugging in and is claimed to return 25.22 km/l. The ES 500e is fully electric, with a motor on each axle, a 74.68 kWh battery and a claimed 580 km range. It can charge from 10 to 80 percent in about 28 minutes on a 150 kW charger.

Every version gets a 14-inch touchscreen, Lexus Safety System+ driver aids including adaptive cruise and lane tracing, eight airbags and 19-inch or larger wheels. The hybrid Luxury and the 500e add Mark Levinson audio, a head-up display, a 360-degree camera and heated and ventilated front seats.

Should I buy the hybrid or the electric ES?

For most buyers, the hybrid. It is about ₹19 lakh cheaper than the 500e, needs no charger, and in city use should already be very economical. The 500e makes sense if you have home charging, mostly drive within a known range and want quicker acceleration and all-wheel drive. Check that your building allows a wall charger before you decide.

Is the ES good for chauffeur use?

Yes, this is its main strength. The long wheelbase gives generous rear legroom, the cabin is quiet, and the hybrid runs silently at low speeds. The Luxury versions add rear-friendly touches such as better audio and more comfort features. A long-wheelbase E-Class or 5 Series offers similar space but at a higher price.

What are ownership costs like?

Lexus gives an 8-year or 2,00,000 km vehicle warranty, an 8-year hybrid battery warranty and prepaid service packages of up to 8 years. Hybrid brakes tend to wear slowly. The catch is reach: Lexus has few dealers, mostly in large cities, so check your nearest workshop before buying.

Can the ES handle Indian roads?

Lexus has raised the ride height by 20 mm for India, which should help over speed breakers. It is still a long, low sedan, so take steep ramps and deep potholes slowly. The 21-inch wheels on the 500e have thinner sidewalls than the hybrid’s 19-inch wheels, so the hybrid is the safer bet on poor roads.
