BMW M340i
The fastest 3 Series sold in India: a regular-wheelbase saloon with a 374 PS 3.0-litre straight-six and all-wheel drive, priced at ₹77.8 lakh ex-showroom. It sits between the long-wheelbase 3 Series and the full M cars. It suits a driver who wants serious pace in a car that still works as a family saloon.

Our verdict on the M340i
The M340i is the sweet spot of BMW's performance range in India. Its six-cylinder engine is fast and smooth, all-wheel drive makes the power easy to use, and it remains a practical five-seat saloon with a 480-litre boot. The catch is that it is built on the standard 3 Series body, not the long-wheelbase one BMW sells for chauffeur-driven buyers, so rear legroom is ordinary for the price. At ₹77.8 lakh it also costs about ₹15 lakh more than a 330Li long-wheelbase. If you sit in the back more than you drive, buy the long-wheelbase car. If you drive yourself and enjoy it, the M340i is the better buy than an M2 or M4 for most people.
Good things
- Strong six-cylinder performance with all-wheel drive.
- Practical saloon with a 480-litre boot.
- Much cheaper than BMW's full M cars for similar everyday pace.
Could be better
- Rear legroom is ordinary next to the 3 Series Long Wheelbase.
- About ₹15 lakh more than a 330Li long-wheelbase.
- Low-profile tyres and firm M Sport set-up on rough roads.

BMW M340i: M-car pace in a four-door family saloon
The M340i is an M Performance version of the 3 Series. It uses a 3.0-litre turbo inline-six making 374 PS and 500 Nm, with an eight-speed automatic and BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive. BMW India claims 0-100 km/h in 4.4 seconds and 13.02 km/l. It is the only 3 Series in India built on the standard wheelbase; the 330Li and 320Ld use the longer body.
Inside it is a five-seat saloon with a 480-litre boot, so it handles family duty. Equipment includes a sunroof, a 360-degree camera, a Harman Kardon sound system and electric front seats with memory. BMW India does not publish ground clearance; it sits low, so take large speed breakers slowly. Top speed is 230 km/h.
M340i or 3 Series Long Wheelbase?
If you are driven, choose the long-wheelbase 330Li or 320Ld for its extra rear legroom and lower price. If you drive yourself and want performance, the M340i is far quicker and more enjoyable.
Is the M340i a real M car?
Not quite. It is an M Performance model, tuned for fast road driving rather than the track. That makes it easier to live with than an M3 or M4 while still being very quick.
What fuel economy should I expect?
BMW claims 13.02 km/l. In city traffic with a heavy right foot, expect noticeably less. It runs on petrol, so there is no diesel option for long-distance buyers.
