Our verdict on the i5 LWB
The i5 LWB makes a strong case for itself because BMW has priced it so close to the petrol 530Li. You get the same long, comfortable cabin, a quieter drive and much lower energy costs if you charge at home, for about ₹2.6 lakh more ex-showroom. The claimed 669 km (MIDC) is generous, though real-world range will be lower, especially with the AC working hard. BMW has not published a boot figure, and batteries add weight under the floor, so check luggage space on a test drive. For long trips on routes with patchy fast charging, the petrol car is simpler. For city and intercity use with home charging, this is the 5 Series we would choose.

BMW India builds the i5 LWB on the same stretched body as the 530Li, at 5,175 mm long with a 3,105 mm wheelbase. It is sold as a single i5 eDrive35L M Sport at ₹79.6 lakh ex-showroom. A single motor drives the rear wheels with 272 PS and 410 Nm, and BMW claims 0-100 km/h in 6.7 seconds and a 195 km/h top speed.
The 81.6 kWh battery gives a claimed 669 km on the Indian MIDC cycle. Rear-axle air suspension keeps the ride height level with a full load, and standard kit includes 20-inch M alloy wheels, the illuminated kidney grille and BMW's glass-finish controls. BMW offers an eight-year or 1,60,000 km battery warranty.
i5 LWB or 530Li: which should I buy?
If you can charge at home or work, the i5 LWB costs only ₹2.6 lakh more and will be far cheaper to run per kilometre. If you drive long distances on routes with few fast chargers, the petrol 530Li is easier.
How far will the i5 LWB really go on a charge?
The 669 km figure is from the MIDC test, which is gentle. Expect noticeably less on fast highways and in hot weather with the AC on. It is still enough for most intercity trips with one charging stop.
Is there a faster i5?
Yes. BMW also sells the i5 M60 xDrive, a shorter, imported performance version with 601 PS and all-wheel drive, at ₹1.20 crore. It is a very different car aimed at drivers, not rear-seat passengers.
