Our verdict on the i7

For a chauffeur-driven buyer with home charging, the i7 50 xDrive is the pick of the 7 Series range. It costs the same ₹1.95 crore ex-showroom as the petrol 740 M Sport, adds all-wheel drive, is quieter, and claims up to 728 km on the WLTP test. Real-world range will be lower on highways and in heat, but still enough for most intercity trips. The i7 M70 xDrive adds a lot of performance for about ₹70 lakh more, which few rear-seat owners will use; note that its price comes from aggregators, as BMW India does not list it. BMW India also does not publish the car's dimensions or boot size, so check that it suits your garage and luggage.

Good things

  • Same starting price as the petrol 7 Series, with all-wheel drive.
  • Long claimed range from a 112.5 kWh battery.
  • Silent, very comfortable rear cabin with a large theatre screen.

Could be better

  • The M70 is about ₹70 lakh more and its price is not listed by BMW India.
  • Real-world range is well below WLTP claims in hot weather.
  • Boot space and dimensions are not published by BMW India.

BMW i7: the electric flagship that costs the same as the petrol

BMW India's facelifted i7 comes in two versions, both with two motors, all-wheel drive and a 112.5 kWh (net) battery. The i7 50 xDrive makes 335 kW (455 hp) and 660 Nm, reaches 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds and claims 728 km on the WLTP cycle. The i7 M70 xDrive makes 500 kW (680 hp) and 1100 Nm, does 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and claims 686 km.

The cabin matches the petrol 740: BMW Panoramic Vision across the windscreen, adaptive two-axle air suspension and a 31.3-inch 8K theatre screen for the rear seats. The M70 rides on 21-inch wheels, while the 50 xDrive uses 20-inch wheels. BMW lists five standard colours, with BMW Individual two-tone finishes at extra cost.

i7 50 xDrive or i7 M70 xDrive?

The 50 xDrive has more range, the same comfort and costs about ₹70 lakh less. The M70 is for owners who drive themselves and want supercar-level acceleration in a limousine.

i7 or the petrol 740 M Sport?

They start at the same price. With home charging, the i7 is quieter, smoother and cheaper to run. The 740 suits owners who regularly drive long distances where fast charging is scarce.

How should I charge an i7?

A home wallbox is the practical way to keep a 112.5 kWh battery topped up. Use public fast chargers for long trips, and plan stops, as charging speed varies widely between stations in India.
