Porsche Panamera

The Panamera is Porsche's large four-door petrol grand tourer, a five-metre car that drives far more like a sports car than a limousine. India currently gets one version: the 353 PS V6 with rear-wheel drive and air suspension. It suits an owner who drives themselves and wants space for four, rather than a chauffeur-driven buyer.

It is the only Panamera Porsche India lists, and it is enough car: the V6 is quick and the air suspension rides well. Add the 90-litre tank (about ₹23,000) for longer highway range.

Our verdict on the Panamera

The Panamera makes the most sense for someone who drives. It handles with real precision for a car this size, the air suspension rides well on Indian roads, and the V6 is quick without being thirsty by luxury standards. The cabin seats four adults well, and the hatchback boot is more useful than a saloon's. At ₹1.79 crore it costs about as much as a well-specified Mercedes S-Class or BMW 7 Series. Those cars are better if you sit in the back: they are quieter, softer and loaded with rear-seat comfort features. The Panamera's 132 mm ground clearance also needs care over speed breakers. If you want a fast, comfortable four-seater to drive yourself, it is one of the best choices. If you want a chauffeur car, buy the S-Class.

Good things

  • Drives like a much smaller car
  • Air suspension and a good ride as standard
  • Hatchback boot is more practical than a saloon's
  • Four genuinely usable adult seats

Could be better

  • Only one version is listed in India
  • Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7 Series offer more rear comfort for the money
  • Low 132 mm ground clearance
  • Many comfort features are expensive options

Porsche Panamera: a four-door porsche for drivers

This is the third-generation Panamera. Porsche India's configurator currently lists a single version: the rear-wheel-drive Panamera with a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6, 353 PS, 500 Nm and an 8-speed PDK gearbox. Porsche claims 0-100 km/h in 5.3 seconds and a top speed of 272 km/h. Other Panamera versions sold abroad, including the hybrids, are not in Porsche India's current configurator.

It is 5,052 mm long with a 2,950 mm wheelbase, so rear legroom is generous. Standard equipment includes adaptive air suspension, Matrix LED headlights, Surround View with active parking support, four-zone climate control, Bose sound and electrically adjustable individual rear seats with memory. The boot holds 494 litres and has a hatchback opening.

At ₹1.79 crore ex-showroom it is priced against the Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7 Series. Running costs are high: tyres, brakes and servicing are expensive, and Porsche centres are only in larger cities. Porsche builds each car to order, so the options you choose can affect how long delivery takes. It is a car for an owner who drives often and values a fast, comfortable four-seater over the softness of a chauffeur limousine.

Panamera or Mercedes S-Class?

Choose the Panamera if you drive yourself and enjoy it. Choose the S-Class if you are driven: it is softer, quieter and has more rear-seat luxury and technology for similar money.

Is the rear seat comfortable for adults?

Yes. There are two individual rear seats with electric adjustment and memory, and the long wheelbase gives good legroom. Headroom is lower than in a conventional saloon because of the sloping roof.

Will it clear Indian speed breakers?

Ground clearance is 132 mm at normal height, and the air suspension only lowers the car from there; it has no raised setting. Take speed breakers slowly and at an angle.

What mileage does it give?

Porsche's WLTP figures work out to about 9.6-10.4 km/l. Expect less in city traffic. Porsche India does not publish an ARAI figure.
