Porsche Cayenne

The petrol Cayenne is Porsche's full-size five-seat SUV, now sold alongside the Cayenne Electric. India gets the 353 PS V6 Cayenne, a better-equipped Black Edition and the 500 PS V8 GTS. It suits a family that wants a large luxury SUV which drives far better than its size suggests, and does not want to depend on charging.

Our verdict on the Cayenne

The Cayenne is the luxury SUV for people who enjoy driving. It steers and corners like a smaller car, the air suspension rides well, and the cabin and boot are big enough for a family. The base V6 is the best value. It has the kit that matters, and it is quick. The Black Edition adds big wheels, better lights, Bose sound and a panoramic roof for about ₹32 lakh, which is a lot for mostly cosmetic changes. The GTS is for people who want a V8 while it lasts. Against a BMW X5 or Mercedes GLE, the Cayenne costs more and has fewer standard features, but it is the better car to drive. A Range Rover Sport is more comfortable and more capable off-road. If you can charge at home, the Cayenne Electric is newer and roomier, from ₹1.77 crore.

Good things

  • Drives far better than a two-tonne SUV should
  • Air suspension, Surround View and Matrix LEDs as standard
  • Big 772-litre boot and a roomy rear seat
  • V8 GTS still on sale

Could be better

  • Costs more than a BMW X5 or Mercedes GLE with less standard kit
  • Black Edition charges heavily for mostly cosmetic upgrades
  • Thirsty: claimed figures of about 8-9.4 km/l
  • Smaller colour choice than other Porsches

Porsche Cayenne: the driver's luxury suv

The current Cayenne is the updated third-generation model. Porsche India's configurator lists three petrol versions. The Cayenne has a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 with 353 PS and 500 Nm, while the Black Edition uses the same engine with more equipment and black exterior details. The GTS has a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with 500 PS and 660 Nm. All have an 8-speed Tiptronic S automatic and all-wheel drive.

The Cayenne is 4,930 mm long with a 2,895 mm wheelbase. Adaptive air suspension is standard, giving 193 mm of ground clearance at normal height and more in the off-road settings. Boot space is 772 litres up to the rear seat backs. Standard kit includes Matrix LED headlights, Surround View, four-zone climate control and Comfort Access.

Prices run from ₹1.51 crore to ₹2.11 crore ex-showroom. Rivals include the BMW X5, Mercedes GLE, Audi Q8 and Range Rover Sport. Service is only at Porsche centres in larger cities, and tyres and brakes for a heavy, fast SUV are not cheap. Porsche India sells the petrol Cayenne alongside the Cayenne Electric, so buyers can choose either fuel at similar prices.

Petrol Cayenne or Cayenne Electric?

The Cayenne Electric is newer, has a longer wheelbase and much more power, and starts at ₹1.77 crore. Buy it if you can charge at home. The petrol car makes more sense if you drive long distances outside cities or want a V8.

Is the Black Edition worth ₹32 lakh more?

Only if you would add most of its extras anyway: 21-inch wheels, HD-Matrix headlights, Bose sound, memory seats and a panoramic roof. The engine and performance are the same as the base car.

How does it compare with a BMW X5 or Mercedes GLE?

The Cayenne handles better and feels more special. The BMW and Mercedes cost less, come with more standard equipment and have more dealers. If comfort and kit matter more than driving, they are the better buys.

Can it handle rough Indian roads?

Yes. The standard air suspension rides well and can raise the car to 208 mm in the off-road setting, or 238 mm in the extra-high setting. Large wheels on the Black Edition and GTS make the ride a little firmer.
