Range Rover Sport

The Range Rover Sport is the lower, shorter and more road-focused alternative to the full Range Rover. The 3.0 petrol and diesel versions are assembled in India and start at ₹1.43 crore, while the V8 Twenty Edition and SV models take the price up to ₹2.35 crore. It suits buyers who want Range Rover comfort with a sharper drive and fewer rupees spent.

Our verdict on the Range Rover Sport

The Range Rover Sport makes most sense in its locally assembled 3.0 form. The Dynamic HSE diesel at ₹1.43 crore is well equipped, quick enough for anyone, and much cheaper to fuel than the V8s. Petrol and diesel are priced the same, so choose by how far you drive; the diesel claims about 13.6 km/l against about 10.4 km/l for the petrol. The Autobiography adds ₹17 lakh of finish rather than ability. The Twenty Edition and the SV range are fast and rare but cost ₹47 lakh to ₹92 lakh more than the entry car, and fuel bills climb accordingly. If you mostly drive on rough roads or need seven seats, a Defender or Land Cruiser is the more practical buy. Do check service support near you before booking.

Good things

  • Diesel combines 700 Nm with claimed WLTP economy above 13 km/l
  • Local assembly keeps the 3.0 versions far cheaper than the full Range Rover
  • Strong standard kit: massage seats, ventilated rear seats, 3D surround sound
  • Air suspension with 218 mm ride height and 900 mm wading depth

Could be better

  • Only five seats; no third-row option
  • V8 versions claim only about 8.4-8.5 km/l on the WLTP cycle
  • SV models cost up to ₹92 lakh more than the entry diesel
  • Dealer and workshop network is thin outside major cities

Range Rover Sport: the diesel is the smart buy

This is the third-generation Range Rover Sport, a five-seat SUV that sits between the Velar and the full-size Range Rover. It is 4,946 mm long on a 2,997 mm wheelbase, with air suspension and an 8-speed automatic across the range. The 3.0 petrol and diesel versions are locally assembled, which is why they cost much less than the imported V8 models.

The 3.0 diesel is a 350 PS mild hybrid with 700 Nm, and the 3.0 petrol is a 400 PS mild hybrid with 550 Nm. Both come in Dynamic HSE and Autobiography trims at the same price. Above them sit the Twenty Edition, with a 540 PS 4.4 twin-turbo V8, and the SV, SV Black and SV Carbon, which use a 635 PS version of that V8.

Prices run from ₹1.43 crore for the Dynamic HSE to ₹2.35 crore for the SV Carbon. Even the entry car gets semi-aniline leather, heated and ventilated massage front seats, ventilated rear seats, 22-inch wheels and Meridian 3D surround sound. Autobiography adds forged wheels and richer trim; the SV models add 6D Dynamics suspension and carbon parts.

Should I buy the petrol or the diesel?

They cost the same, so it comes down to use. The diesel has more torque and claims about 13.6 km/l on the WLTP cycle. The petrol is smoother and a little quicker, but Land Rover's older NEDC figure for it is about 10.4 km/l, and real-world use will be lower. For long highway trips, take the diesel.

Is the SV worth the extra money?

Only if performance is the point. The SV is 3.9 seconds to 100 km/h and has hydraulic 6D Dynamics suspension, but at ₹2.05 crore it costs ₹62 lakh more than the diesel Dynamic HSE and claims about 8.5 km/l. For everyday use the 3.0 cars are quick enough.

How does it compare with the full Range Rover?

The Sport is shorter, lower and sharper to drive, and it seats five only. The Range Rover offers more rear space and long-wheelbase options but starts around ₹2.40 crore. If rear-seat comfort is the priority, look at the Range Rover; if you drive yourself, the Sport is better value.

What will it cost to own?

Budget for premium service bills, expensive 22- or 23-inch tyres and high insurance. Land Rover dealers are mainly in metros and large cities. The locally assembled 3.0 cars should be easier to support for parts than the imported V8 models, but confirm service plans and waiting times with your dealer.
