Range Rover Velar

The Velar is the most design-led Range Rover sold in India, built locally and now offered in one fully loaded Autobiography trim. Buyers choose between a 250 PS petrol and a 204 PS mild-hybrid diesel, both with an 8-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. It suits someone who wants a Range Rover badge and a calm, comfortable cabin without the size or price of the Range Rover Sport.

It is the only trim listed, so choose the engine. We would take the diesel: 430 Nm suits a heavy SUV, and the mild-hybrid system helps in traffic. The petrol makes sense only if you drive little or worry about diesel rules in your city.

Our verdict on the Range Rover Velar

The Velar is the best-looking SUV in its price band, and in Autobiography form it is very well equipped: air suspension, massaging seats, a head-up display, Meridian audio and a 3D surround camera are all standard. The cabin is quiet and the ride on air springs is comfortable. The compromises are real, though. Both engines are 2.0-litre four-cylinders, so it is not as effortless as six-cylinder rivals such as the BMW X5 or Mercedes GLE, which cost a little more. Rear space and boot are adequate rather than generous, and Land Rover's reliability record and service costs deserve a careful look. Buy it if design and the badge matter to you and you will negotiate hard. If space and engine refinement come first, test drive an X5 or GLE before deciding.

Good things

  • Distinctive design inside and out, with a clean, uncluttered cabin
  • Very complete standard kit, including air suspension and massaging front seats
  • Comfortable ride and genuine off-road ability with Terrain Response 2
  • Assembled in India, which keeps the price below imported rivals

Could be better

  • Only four-cylinder engines at a price where rivals offer six cylinders
  • Rear seat and boot are not as roomy as an X5 or GLE
  • Land Rover running costs and reliability need careful checking
  • Prices have moved several times; quotes vary by several lakh between sources

Range Rover Velar: design first, one loaded trim

The Velar sits between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport. In India it is assembled locally and, on the maker's current list, sold only in the top Autobiography trim at ₹88.50 lakh ex-showroom. You choose the engine: a 2.0-litre turbo petrol with 250 PS and 365 Nm, or a 2.0-litre mild-hybrid diesel with 204 PS and 430 Nm. Both use an 8-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.

Standard equipment is extensive. You get electronic air suspension, an 11.4-inch curved Pivi Pro touchscreen, a 12.3-inch driver display and head-up display, a 3D surround camera, a sliding panoramic roof, four-zone climate control, Meridian 3D surround sound and front seats that heat, cool and massage. The air suspension can lower the car for easier entry and raise it for rough ground.

This is a car bought with the eyes, and that is fine as long as you know the trade-offs. The engines are adequate rather than special, the rear seat is not the roomiest in the class, and running costs need checking before you buy. Ask for a written quote, since list prices have changed several times since 2025.

Petrol or diesel?

Both cost the same. The diesel has more torque, feels more relaxed on the highway and will go further on a tank. The petrol is quicker to 100 km/h on paper and quieter at idle. If you drive more than about 1,000 km a month or travel out of town often, take the diesel.

How does it compare with the BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE?

The X5 and GLE cost somewhat more but offer six-cylinder engines, more rear space and bigger boots. The Velar wins on design and on standard air suspension. If you carry adults in the back often or want a smoother engine, the Germans are the better buy.

Is it worth the price?

As a design object with a complete feature list, yes. As a practical family SUV, a Mercedes GLC or Audi Q5 gives similar space for noticeably less money. Check the extended warranty and service package costs before you sign, because they change the real cost of ownership.

Is there a cheaper Velar?

A petrol-only Dynamic SE with coil springs and a fixed glass roof was listed at about ₹79.90 lakh in early 2026, but it does not appear on the maker's current models page. Ask your dealer whether it is still available before planning around it.
