Range Rover Evoque

The smallest and cheapest Range Rover sold in India, now assembled here and offered only in the top Autobiography trim. It suits a city buyer who wants a premium badge, a high-quality cabin and all-wheel drive in a compact footprint, and who rarely carries more than four people or much luggage.

We would take the diesel. It costs the same as the petrol, has more torque (430 Nm against 365 Nm) and its claimed 14.71 km/l beats the petrol's 12.82 km/l. Pick the petrol only if you drive short city distances and want a quieter engine.

Our verdict on the Range Rover Evoque

The Evoque is about style and the Range Rover name more than space or value. At ₹64.86 lakh ex-showroom you get the top Autobiography trim with a sliding panoramic roof, Pixel LED lights and Meridian audio, and local assembly has kept the price below where it used to be. The rear seat and boot are tight for a car of this price, and the 2.0-litre engines are adequate rather than quick. A BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA or Audi Q3 gives similar space for less money, and a Volvo XC60 or BMW X3 gives far more room for a little more. Buy the Evoque if the design and badge matter most to you and four adults is your usual load. Otherwise we would look at the bigger German SUVs first.

Good things

  • Top Autobiography equipment comes as standard, with no expensive options needed
  • Diesel and petrol priced the same, so you choose on use, not cost
  • All-wheel drive and 212 mm ground clearance handle bad roads and light trails
  • Compact size makes it easy to live with in crowded cities

Could be better

  • Rear seat and 472-litre boot are small for the price
  • 2.0-litre engines feel ordinary next to rivals' performance
  • Land Rover's dealer and service network is thinner than the German brands' outside big cities
  • Bigger SUVs such as the Volvo XC60 and BMW X3 cost only a little more

Range Rover Evoque: a compact range rover sold fully loaded

The Range Rover Evoque is the entry point to the Range Rover family in India. It sits on a 2,681 mm wheelbase and measures 4,371 mm long, so it is closer in size to a BMW X1 than to an X3. Land Rover now assembles it locally and sells one trim, the Autobiography, with a choice of a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol or a 2.0-litre diesel, both mild hybrids with a 9-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.

The ex-showroom price is ₹64.86 lakh for either fuel. That buys a well-equipped cabin: Windsor leather, 14-way electric front seats with memory, a sliding panoramic roof, Meridian surround sound, Pixel LED headlights and a ClearSight mirror that uses a camera when the rear view is blocked. Ground clearance is 212 mm and the wading depth is 530 mm, more than most compact luxury SUVs offer.

The trade-off is space. The 472-litre boot is fine for a couple of suitcases, but the rear seat is not generous for tall adults, and the sloping roof cuts headroom. The petrol makes 249 PS and 365 Nm and the diesel 204 PS and 430 Nm. Both are smooth but not fast for the money. Prices are indicative ex-showroom figures from Land Rover India's price list.

Petrol or diesel: which Evoque should I buy?

Both cost ₹64.86 lakh ex-showroom. The diesel has more pulling power (430 Nm) and a better claimed figure of 14.71 km/l, so it suits highway and long-distance driving. The petrol is livelier at higher revs and quieter, but its claimed 12.82 km/l will drop further in city traffic. Check diesel registration rules in your city, especially in Delhi-NCR, before you decide.

Is the Evoque big enough for a family?

For two adults and two children, yes. Four adults will fit for shorter trips, but rear headroom and knee room are tight for anyone tall. The 472-litre boot takes weekend luggage, not a family holiday load. If you need more space, the Discovery Sport costs about the same and adds a small third row, and a Volvo XC60 has a much roomier rear seat.

How does it compare with German rivals?

A BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA or Audi Q3 costs less and is just as practical. The Evoque wins on design, standard equipment and ground clearance, and it comes with all-wheel drive. The German cars usually have wider service networks and stronger resale, so weigh that against the Range Rover badge.

Can it go off road?

Light trails, broken roads and water crossings up to 530 mm are within its reach thanks to all-wheel drive, Terrain Response and 212 mm of ground clearance. It is still a road-focused SUV on large alloy wheels and road tyres, so do not expect Defender-level ability.
