Land Rover Discovery Sport

Land Rover's cheapest seven-seater in India, assembled locally and sold in one well-equipped Dynamic SE trim with a petrol or diesel engine at the same price. It suits a family that wants a premium badge, all-wheel drive and an occasional third row for children, but its age and tight rearmost seats mean bigger rivals deserve a look.

Choose the diesel. It costs the same as the petrol, gives 430 Nm against 365 Nm, and its claimed 13.1 km/l is well ahead of the petrol's 10.5 km/l. With seven people or luggage on board the extra torque matters.

Our verdict on the Discovery Sport

The Discovery Sport is a sensible way into a Land Rover with seven seats, but it is an old design and the price is no longer small. At ₹63.37 lakh ex-showroom you get all-wheel drive, Terrain Response, a panoramic roof, a 3D camera and an 11.4-inch screen, and local assembly keeps it cheaper than most imported rivals. The third row is for children or short hops, and with it raised the boot is almost gone. A Skoda Kodiaq offers similar practicality for far less, and a Volvo XC60 is roomier for five for about ₹7.5 lakh more. Buy the Discovery Sport if you value Land Rover's off-road ability and the occasional extra seats. If you need seven adult seats regularly, look at a bigger SUV instead.

Good things

  • Occasional third row in a compact footprint
  • All-wheel drive, Terrain Response and 600 mm wading depth for real off-road use
  • Diesel and petrol priced the same, with generous standard equipment
  • Sliding second row lets you trade legroom for boot space

Could be better

  • Third row is cramped and leaves only about 115 litres of boot
  • Petrol's claimed 10.5 km/l will be costly in city use
  • Old design with a newer Metropolitan version shown but not yet priced
  • Land Rover's dealer and service network is thinner than the German brands' outside big cities

Land Rover Discovery Sport: seven seats with land rover ability

The Discovery Sport is the smallest model in Land Rover's Discovery family and the brand's most affordable seven-seater in India. It is 4,597 mm long with a 2,741 mm wheelbase, so it is closer in size to a mid-size SUV than to a full-size one. The car on sale is the locally assembled Dynamic SE, offered with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol of 249 PS or a 2.0-litre diesel of 204 PS. Both are mild hybrids and both come with a 9-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.

Both versions cost ₹63.37 lakh ex-showroom. Standard kit includes a fixed panoramic roof, DuoLeather seats with 12-way electric adjustment and driver memory, Meridian audio, an 11.4-inch Pivi Pro touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 12.3-inch driver display, wireless charging, a 3D surround camera and a powered tailgate. Terrain Response 2 and a 600 mm wading depth give it more off-road ability than most rivals at this price.

The seven-seat layout is the main reason to choose it, but the third row is small and with all seats up the boot holds only about 115 litres. Fold the third row and space rises to about 840 litres. Land Rover India's website already shows a Metropolitan version that has no published price yet, so check with the dealer which version you are being offered. Prices are indicative ex-showroom figures.

Can adults sit in the third row?

Only for short trips. The third row is designed for children and occasional use. The second row slides, so you can share legroom with the rear passengers, but tall adults will be uncomfortable there on long drives. If you need seven adult seats often, a larger SUV such as the Land Rover Discovery or a Volvo XC90 makes more sense.

Petrol or diesel Discovery Sport?

The price is the same, so pick on use. The diesel's 430 Nm and claimed 13.1 km/l make it the better choice for highway trips and a full load. The petrol is quieter and smoother but claims only 10.5 km/l. Check your city's rules on diesel registration before you buy.

Should I wait for the Metropolitan version?

Land Rover India's site now shows a Discovery Sport Metropolitan with Matrix LED headlights, Windsor leather, heated and cooled front seats and Meridian surround sound, but it has no published price yet. If those features matter, ask the dealer about its price and arrival before you commit to the Dynamic SE.

How does it compare with the Range Rover Evoque?

They cost almost the same and share engines. The Evoque has a smarter cabin and design but seats only five and has less space. The Discovery Sport is the practical choice, with more room, a taller body and the extra third row.
