Volvo EC40

The EC40 is the coupe-roofed version of Volvo’s compact electric SUV, previously sold as the C40 Recharge. In India it comes in one fully loaded Ultra version with twin motors, all-wheel drive and an 82 kWh battery. It suits a buyer who wants a quick, well-equipped premium EV for a small family and likes the sloping roofline more than the extra headroom of a boxier SUV.

Our verdict on the EC40

The EC40 is a quick, well-built and well-equipped electric crossover, and at ₹59 lakh ex-showroom it comes with almost nothing left to add. The latest version has a bigger 82 kWh battery and 408 hp, so performance is far beyond what most owners will use, and Volvo’s preliminary WLTP range of 551 km should mean a comfortable 400 km or so in real use. The catch is value. The sloping roof eats into rear headroom and the boot is modest for the money, while the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and BYD Sealion 7 give more cabin space for less. Volvo’s dealer network is also thinner than the mass-market brands. Buy the EC40 if you want a premium badge, strong safety kit and this particular design. If you want the most room per rupee, the rivals make more sense.

Good things

  • Very quick: 408 hp twin-motor AWD, 0-100 km/h in 4.7 seconds
  • Long equipment list with nothing important left as an option
  • 82 kWh battery and fast 200 kW DC charging for highway trips
  • Volvo’s safety and driver-assist kit, including Pilot Assist and a 360-degree camera

Could be better

  • Sloping roof cuts rear headroom compared with the boxier XC40 shape
  • 404-litre boot is modest for a ₹59 lakh car
  • Range and power figures are preliminary, with Indian certification pending
  • Ground clearance is not published, and Volvo’s service network is limited outside big cities

Volvo EC40: a fast, fully loaded electric car with a coupe roof

The EC40 is Volvo’s compact electric crossover with a fastback-style roof. It started life as the C40 Recharge and was renamed in line with Volvo’s new naming. Volvo India now lists the 2027 model year in a single Ultra version with twin motors and all-wheel drive, priced from ₹59 lakh ex-showroom. It sits above the smaller EX30 in Volvo’s electric line-up.

The two motors make 408 hp and 670 Nm, enough for 0-100 km/h in a claimed 4.7 seconds. The battery is 82 kWh, and Volvo quotes a preliminary WLTP range of up to 551 km, with certification for India still pending. On a 200 kW DC charger, 10-80% takes about 28 minutes; a full charge on an 11 kW AC wallbox takes about eight hours.

The cabin has a 12.3-inch driver display, a 9-inch portrait centre screen with Google built-in, Harman Kardon audio and a fixed panoramic roof. Driver aids include Pilot Assist, lane keeping, blind-spot alerts and a 360-degree camera. Rear legroom is reasonable, but the roofline leaves less headroom for tall passengers than a conventional SUV.

How far will the EC40 go on a charge?

Volvo India quotes up to 551 km on the WLTP cycle and calls it preliminary. WLTP is usually closer to real life than Indian MIDC figures, but highway speeds, air-conditioning and heavy traffic will cut it. Plan on roughly 400-450 km of real driving, and charge at home overnight for daily use.

Is it practical enough for a family?

For a family of four with average luggage, yes. The boot holds 404 litres with the seats up, and there is a 31-litre front compartment for charging cables. Tall rear passengers will notice the low roof. If you often carry adults in the back or lots of bags, a boxier SUV is the better choice.

EC40 or a Hyundai Ioniq 5 or BYD Sealion 7?

The Ioniq 5 and Sealion 7 cost less and offer more cabin room. The EC40 is quicker than most versions of those cars, has all-wheel drive as standard and carries the Volvo badge and safety reputation. Choose the EC40 for its design, performance and brand; choose a rival if space and value matter more.

What about service and running costs?

Electric running costs are low if you charge at home. Volvo’s dealer and service network is concentrated in larger cities, so check the distance to your nearest workshop before buying. Ask the dealer about battery warranty terms, service packages and the cost of replacing the 19-inch tyres.
