Hyundai IONIQ 5

The IONIQ 5 is Hyundai’s flagship electric SUV in India, now with a larger 84 kWh battery and an ARAI-certified range of 690 km. It is sold in one fully loaded rear-wheel-drive version. It suits families who want a roomy, comfortable EV with very fast charging and a long feature list, and who can live with a price that has climbed well above the earlier model.

Our verdict on the IONIQ 5

The updated IONIQ 5 fixes the old car’s main weakness, range, with an 84 kWh battery and a 690 km ARAI claim. Its strengths remain: a long 3,000 mm wheelbase, a flat floor, adjustable rear seats and some of the fastest charging on sale in India when you find a high-power charger. Equipment is generous, including Level 2 ADAS, a 360-degree camera, ventilated seats and Bose audio. The problem is price. At ₹55.70 lakh ex-showroom it costs about ₹7 lakh more than the outgoing model, and it now costs about ₹6 lakh more than the BYD Sealion 7 Premium, though still about ₹10 lakh less than the Kia EV6. Hyundai’s large service network is a real plus for an EV. If you want a spacious, comfortable electric family car from a mainstream brand, it is a sound choice; if value is the priority, compare the Sealion 7 first.

Good things

  • Long 690 km ARAI-certified range from the 84 kWh battery
  • Very fast charging: 10-80% in about 18 minutes on a 350 kW charger
  • Spacious cabin with a flat floor and sliding rear seats
  • Hyundai’s wide service network across India

Could be better

  • ₹55.70 lakh is a big jump over the earlier model
  • Rear-wheel drive only; no all-wheel-drive version
  • Torque, boot size and ground clearance are not published by Hyundai India
  • Ultra-fast 350 kW chargers are still rare on Indian highways

Hyundai IONIQ 5: more range, more money

The IONIQ 5 is built on Hyundai’s dedicated E-GMP electric platform. The 2026 update, launched in India in April 2026, brings a bigger 84 kWh battery in place of the earlier 72.6 kWh pack, along with revised bumpers, skid plates, new wheels, a new rear spoiler and updated cabin tech. Hyundai sells one version, priced at ₹55.70 lakh ex-showroom.

A single rear motor makes 168 kW, or 228.5 PS, and drives the rear wheels through a single-speed gearbox. Hyundai claims an ARAI-certified 690 km on a charge. On a 350 kW DC charger, a 10-80% charge takes about 18 minutes, and a full charge on the supplied 11 kW wallbox takes about seven and a half hours.

The cabin has twin 12.3-inch screens with Hyundai’s new connected navigation system, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, over-the-air updates and Bose audio. Front seats are heated and ventilated and can recline into a relaxation position, the rear seat slides, and the centre console moves. There is also a 57-litre front trunk.

How far will the IONIQ 5 really go?

Hyundai’s ARAI-certified figure is 690 km. Indian test-cycle figures are usually optimistic, so plan on roughly 450-500 km in mixed real-world use, less at sustained highway speeds with the air-conditioning on. That is still enough for most intercity trips with one charging stop.

Is the updated model worth the higher price?

If range anxiety held you back from the old car, yes, the larger battery makes a real difference. If you already find 450-500 km of claimed range enough, the price rise is hard to justify, and rivals such as the BYD Sealion 7 offer similar space for less.

IONIQ 5 or Kia EV6?

They share the same platform and similar batteries. The IONIQ 5 is boxier with more rear space and an adjustable rear seat. The EV6 is lower and sportier to drive. Choose the IONIQ 5 for family comfort and the EV6 if you enjoy driving more.

What does ownership look like?

Running costs are low with home charging, and the 11 kW wallbox is included. Hyundai has one of the largest service networks in India, which helps. Ask the dealer about battery warranty terms and confirm that your nearest workshop is trained for EVs.
