Our verdict on the GLA

The GLA is the cheapest way into a Mercedes SUV, and it is well equipped: even the GLA 200 gets the panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera, Blind Spot Assist and a powered driver's seat with memory. The diesel 4MATIC is the more complete car for Indian highways, and it costs only ₹1.2 lakh more than the petrol. What you do not get is extra space. The GLA is about as long as mainstream mid-size SUVs that cost far less, and its rear seat and boot are no bigger. Running and service costs are Mercedes-level, not mid-size SUV level. If the badge and finish matter to you, the GLA 220d 4MATIC is a sound buy. If you need room for five adults, look at a larger SUV for the same money.

Mercedes-Benz GLA: the badge at its lowest price

The GLA is the smallest SUV Mercedes-Benz sells in India. It is 4,412 mm long with a 2,729 mm wheelbase, so its footprint is similar to a mainstream mid-size SUV. Buyers choose between a GLA 200 with a 1.3 petrol (163 HP, 270 Nm) and a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox driving the front wheels, or a GLA 220d with a 2.0 diesel (190 HP, 400 Nm), eight-speed dual-clutch and 4MATIC all-wheel drive.

Equipment is generous from the start. The GLA 200 has a panoramic sliding sunroof, 360-degree camera, Active Parking Assist, Blind Spot Assist, hands-free tailgate, MBUX infotainment with navigation and a powered driver's seat with memory. The diesel adds all-wheel drive and a larger 51-litre tank; the AMG Line adds AMG styling, 19-inch wheels, sports seats and lowered suspension. Ex-showroom prices run from ₹51.8 lakh to ₹55 lakh as listed by Mercedes-Benz India in October 2026. That is a lot for a car of this size, and buyers should weigh the badge and finish against the cabin space of larger, cheaper SUVs.

Should I buy the petrol or the diesel GLA?

For mostly highway driving, the GLA 220d 4MATIC. It has 400 Nm against the petrol's 270 Nm, all-wheel drive and a bigger tank, for ₹1.2 lakh more. For a short city commute the GLA 200 is adequate and has the same main comfort and safety equipment.

Is the AMG Line worth ₹2 lakh more?

Only if you want the look. It adds AMG bodystyling, 19-inch wheels, sports seats, sports brakes and a lowered comfort suspension. The lower suspension and bigger wheels can make the ride firmer on broken roads, so try both before deciding.

How much space does the GLA have?

Mercedes-Benz quotes a 425-litre boot for the petrol and 427 litres for the diesel, with folding rear seat backs. It is a five-seater, but three adults across the back will be tight. Families who often travel full should look at a larger SUV.

What will it cost to run?

Mercedes-Benz India does not publish ARAI fuel economy for the GLA. Expect luxury-car service and parts prices, and budget for tyres on the 18- or 19-inch wheels. The dealer network is one of the widest among luxury brands in India, which helps outside the big metros.
