Our verdict on the X1

The standard X1 has become a niche choice. At ₹52.9 lakh ex-showroom it is the only way to get a diesel X1, and its claimed 20.37 km/l makes sense for high-mileage owners. But BMW now sells the X1 LWB, with a longer wheelbase and much more rear legroom, for ₹3 lakh less with a petrol engine. Unless you cover a lot of highway kilometres, the LWB is the better family car. BMW India publishes very few dimensions for this version, and aggregators disagree on its boot size, so judge the space in person. The diesel engine is strong and the DCT gearbox is smooth in traffic.

Good things

  • Best claimed fuel economy of any non-hybrid BMW in India.
  • Strong 360 Nm diesel suits highway driving.
  • Compact size is easy in cities.

Could be better

  • Costs more than the roomier X1 LWB petrol.
  • Single variant with no petrol option in this body.
  • BMW India does not publish its dimensions or boot size.

BMW X1: the diesel choice for high-mileage owners

BMW India now sells two X1 models. This page covers the standard-wheelbase car, offered only as the sDrive18d M Sport at ₹52.9 lakh ex-showroom. It uses a 2.0-litre turbo diesel with 150 PS and 360 Nm, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and front-wheel drive, and BMW claims 20.37 km/l. BMW's configurator leaves power blank for this version.

The cabin uses BMW's curved display and the M Sport package is standard. The longer X1 LWB, launched in August 2026, is the petrol alternative with more rear legroom. BMW India does not publish dimensions, boot space or ground clearance for this version, and the aggregator figures we found do not agree, so we have left them out.

X1 or X1 LWB: which should I buy?

The X1 LWB is ₹3 lakh cheaper, has a longer wheelbase and more rear space, but is petrol only. The standard X1 is diesel only and better for long highway mileage. Families who drive mainly in the city should choose the LWB.

Is the X1 diesel economical in real use?

BMW claims 20.37 km/l. Expect less in city traffic, but on highways a diesel of this size is usually very efficient. It is the most frugal non-hybrid BMW on sale in India.

Does the X1 have all-wheel drive?

No. The sDrive18d drives the front wheels only. It is fine for normal roads; it is not meant for off-road use.
