BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé

BMW's cheapest car in India: a compact four-door saloon with a 156 PS 1.5-litre turbo petrol and a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. It is front-wheel drive and comes in two closely priced M Sport trims. It suits a first-time luxury buyer who wants a modern BMW cabin and badge at a mid-forty-lakh price, and does not need a big back seat.

Our verdict on the 2 Series Gran Coupé

The 2 Series Gran Coupé is a sensible way into a new BMW, but it is a small car for the money. The three-cylinder turbo is smooth enough and claims 16.35 km/l, the cabin uses BMW's latest screens, and the boot is a useful 430 litres. Rear headroom and legroom are tight, and it is front-wheel drive, so it does not drive like a traditional rear-drive BMW saloon. At ₹45.8-48.9 lakh ex-showroom it sits close to the X1 LWB at ₹49.9 lakh, which has far more space. Buy the 2 Series if you mostly drive yourself and like the low, sleek shape; if you carry adults in the back, stretch to the X1 LWB or look at the 3 Series Long Wheelbase.

Good things

  • Lowest price of entry to a new BMW in India.
  • Modern cabin with BMW's curved screens and OS 9 software.
  • Useful 430-litre boot and a claimed 16.35 km/l.

Could be better

  • Tight rear seat for adults.
  • Single small three-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive.
  • The X1 LWB is only about ₹1 lakh more than the M Sport Pro and much roomier.

BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé: the cheapest way into a new BMW

The 2 Series Gran Coupé is a compact four-door with a sloping, coupe-like roof. Every version uses a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol with 156 PS and 230 Nm, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and front-wheel drive. BMW claims 0-100 km/h in 8.6 seconds and 16.35 km/l. Top speed is a claimed 230 km/h, and the boot holds 430 litres.

There are two trims, both with the M Sport package. The 218 M Sport has 18-inch M alloy wheels, sport seats with electric adjustment and driver memory, and BMW's curved display. The 218 M Sport Pro adds the Equipment package Professional, an illuminated kidney grille, extended gloss-black exterior trim and illuminated interior trim. BMW India does not publish ground clearance or fuel tank size.

Is the M Sport Pro worth ₹3.1 lakh more?

Only if you want the extra styling and the Professional equipment package. The engine, gearbox, screens and boot are the same, so the 218 M Sport gives most of the car for less.

2 Series Gran Coupé or X1 LWB?

The X1 LWB is an SUV with a long wheelbase and a much bigger rear seat, and the petrol version costs ₹49.9 lakh. If you carry adults in the back, the X1 LWB is the better buy. The 2 Series is lower, sportier to look at and cheaper.

Does the 2 Series feel like a proper BMW to drive?

It is light and agile, and the steering is quick. But it is front-wheel drive with a three-cylinder engine, so it lacks the balance and sound of BMW's rear-drive saloons. For that, the 3 Series is the next step.
