Audi A4
Audi's entry sedan in India, with one engine for every buyer: a 204 hp 2.0 turbo petrol driving the front wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. It suits someone stepping up from a top-end Indian sedan who wants a quick, frugal and well-built German car without paying for a long-wheelbase rival.

Our verdict on the A4
The A4 is now one of the older designs in the segment, and it shows in the cabin layout next to the newer BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class. What it still does well is drive: the 204 hp petrol is quick, the dual-clutch gearbox is smooth once moving, and 17.4 km/l claimed is a strong number for this class. The catch is rear space. Rivals now sell long-wheelbase versions with far more legroom, so if you will be driven, look at those first. If you drive yourself and want a tidy, efficient and well-finished sedan for under ₹56 lakh ex-showroom, the A4 still makes sense. Check service-plan costs with your dealer before you sign, and expect resale to trail the BMW.
Good things
- Strong 204 hp petrol with a quick 7.1-second 0-100 km/h time
- Claimed 17.4 km/l is high for a luxury sedan
- Sunroof and touchscreen even on the base Premium
- Same engine and gearbox in every trim, so the base car loses nothing in performance
Could be better
- Rear legroom trails long-wheelbase rivals
- Cabin design is older than the latest BMW and Mercedes
- Front-wheel drive only; no diesel or quattro
- Bang & Olufsen, wireless charging and keyless entry are top-trim only

Audi A4: the efficient way into a German sedan
The A4 is Audi's smallest sedan in India and its cheapest sedan. Every version uses the same 2.0-litre turbo petrol rated at 204 hp and 320 Nm, with a 12-volt mild-hybrid system and a 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic driving the front wheels. Audi quotes 0-100 km/h in 7.1 seconds and a 241 km/h top speed.
The three trims differ only in equipment. The Premium already has LED headlamps, a glass sunroof, a 25.65 cm MMI touchscreen and smartphone mirroring. The Premium Plus adds the digital Audi virtual cockpit, 3-zone climate control and ambient lighting. The Technology adds Bang & Olufsen 3D sound, navigation, keyless entry, a gesture-operated boot and wireless charging.
At 4,762 mm long with a 2,826 mm wheelbase, the A4 is a standard-length sedan. Its 460-litre boot is useful, and the 54-litre tank combined with the claimed 17.4 km/l gives a long range between fills. Ground clearance is about 165 mm, so steep ramps and tall speed breakers need care. Take a test drive in stop-go traffic to judge how the dual-clutch gearbox behaves at crawling speeds.
Is the A4 big enough for a chauffeur-driven owner?
Not really. The A4 is a normal-wheelbase sedan, while the BMW 3 Series Gran Limousine and the long-wheelbase Mercedes C-Class give rear passengers far more legroom. If you will spend most of your time in the back seat, test those first. The A4 makes more sense for someone who drives themselves.
Which A4 variant should I buy?
The Premium Plus. It gets the digital instrument cluster, 3-zone climate control and ambient lighting, which make the cabin feel more current. The Technology mainly adds comfort and audio extras. The engine, gearbox and performance are the same in all three.
What fuel economy can I expect?
Audi's claimed figure is 17.4 km/l. In city traffic expect clearly less, as with any turbo petrol automatic. The mild-hybrid start-stop system helps a little in stop-go driving. A 54-litre tank means fewer stops on the highway.
Does the A4 have all-wheel drive?
No. The India-spec A4 is front-wheel drive only. If you want quattro all-wheel drive from Audi, you have to step up to the Q5 SUV, which costs about ₹19 lakh more ex-showroom.
