Our verdict on the Q7

The Q7 does what a big family SUV should: it rides well on air suspension, the V6 petrol is smooth and quick, and the third row is usable for children and short trips for adults. It is also cheaper to buy than the BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE, which are five-seaters in India. The downsides are fuel bills, at a claimed 11.21 km/l that will drop sharply in the city, and a design that is now several years old under the facelift. Service and tyre costs on an SUV this size are not small, so price an extended warranty and service plan before you buy. If you need seven seats and want petrol, the Q7 is a sound choice; if you do not need the third row, compare the X5 and GLE first.

Good things

  • Smooth, quick 340 PS V6 with quattro all-wheel drive
  • Usable third row that folds electrically
  • Adaptive air suspension as standard for a comfortable ride
  • Lower entry price than the five-seat BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE

Could be better

  • Petrol only; claimed 11.21 km/l means high running costs
  • 360-degree camera and Matrix LED only on the Technology
  • Third row is tight for adults on long trips
  • Over 5 m long and nearly 2 m wide, so city parking is a chore

Audi Q7: seven seats, air suspension and a smooth V6

The Q7 is Audi's seven-seat SUV and sits below the Q8 in the range. The facelifted India model uses a 3.0-litre V6 turbo petrol rated at 340 PS and 500 Nm, paired with an 8-speed tiptronic automatic and quattro all-wheel drive. Audi quotes 0-100 km/h in 5.6 seconds and a 250 km/h top speed. There is no diesel.

Both trims get adaptive air suspension, a panoramic sunroof, 4-zone climate control, the digital Audi virtual cockpit, 8 airbags and a third row that folds electrically from the boot. The Technology adds Matrix LED headlights, a 360-degree camera with Park Assist Plus, Bang & Olufsen 3D sound, 20-inch wheels, an air ioniser with fragrance and adaptive wipers.

At 5,072 mm long, 1,970 mm wide and with a 3,000 mm wheelbase, the Q7 is large. With the third row folded, boot space is about 780 litres, rising to 1,908 litres with both rear rows down. Ground clearance is about 178 mm and the air suspension can raise it. Claimed efficiency is 11.21 km/l, with an 85-litre tank.

How usable is the Q7's third row?

It suits children and adults on short trips. Longer journeys for adults in the back row will be tight. The good news is that it folds electrically, so switching between a big boot and seven seats is quick.

Q7 or Q8?

The Q8 is a five-seat coupe-style SUV with the same V6, priced about ₹26 lakh higher ex-showroom. The Q7 gives you more space and seven seats for less money. Buy the Q8 only if styling matters more to you than practicality.

What will it cost to run?

The claimed figure is 11.21 km/l, so expect much less in city traffic. Large tyres, air suspension and V6 servicing also add up. Ask the dealer for a quote on a multi-year service plan and extended warranty before you sign.

Is the Technology trim worth it?

For most buyers, yes. The 360-degree camera and park assist make a five-metre SUV far easier to park, and the Matrix LED headlights help on dark highways. The engine and suspension are the same on both trims.
