Our verdict on the Seal

The Seal is a fast, refined and very well-equipped electric saloon for the money. Even the ₹41.50 lakh Dynamic gets Level 2 ADAS, nine airbags, ventilated seats and a 12-speaker Dynaudio system. The Premium is the one we would buy: its bigger battery and stronger motor cost ₹4.70 lakh more, and it has the best claimed range. The Performance is genuinely quick, but ₹53.65 lakh puts it near premium-badge rivals, and you give up some range. The downsides are practical ones. Ground clearance is low for Indian speed breakers, the boot opening is a saloon's, and BYD's service network is thin outside the big cities. Resale is also hard to predict. Prices are indicative ex-showroom.

Good things

  • Long standard equipment list, including Level 2 ADAS and nine airbags
  • Strong performance, especially the AWD Performance
  • Premium's 82.56 kWh battery gives up to 650 km claimed range
  • Comfortable, quiet cabin with a large rotating touchscreen

Could be better

  • 145-149 mm ground clearance needs care over speed breakers and broken roads
  • Saloon boot is less practical than an SUV's
  • BYD's service network is limited outside big cities
  • Resale value is uncertain for a relatively new brand in India

BYD Seal: a sports saloon that is cheap to run

The Seal is a 4.8-metre electric saloon built on BYD's e-Platform 3.0, with the battery cells built into the body structure. That keeps it low and stiff, and its 2,920 mm wheelbase gives good rear legroom. Boot space is 400 litres at the back, plus a 53-litre storage box under the bonnet that suits the charging cable.

The Dynamic uses a 61.44 kWh LFP Blade battery and a 150 kW (204 PS) rear motor, with a claimed 510 km. The Premium moves to an 82.56 kWh pack and a 230 kW (313 PS) motor, rated at 650 km. The Performance adds a front motor for all-wheel drive, 390 kW (530 PS) and 670 Nm, and a claimed 3.8-second 0-100 km/h time, with 580 km of range. All ranges are NEDC claims.

Equipment is strong throughout: Level 2 ADAS, nine airbags, a 360-degree camera, ventilated and heated front seats, a panoramic glass roof, two wireless chargers and a 12-speaker Dynaudio system. The Premium adds a head-up display, leather seats with memory and frequency-selective dampers; the Performance gets BYD's DiSus-C damping and torque-vectoring control.

Will the low ground clearance be a problem?

It can be. At 145-149 mm the Seal sits lower than most SUVs, and it is a long car. Big speed breakers and steep ramps need a slow, angled approach. If your daily route has bad roads, look at the Sealion 7 or another SUV instead.

Is the Performance worth the extra money?

Only if you want the speed. It costs ₹7.45 lakh more than the Premium, is far quicker and gets all-wheel drive, but its claimed range falls from 650 km to 580 km. For most owners the Premium is quick enough and better on long trips.

How fast does it charge?

BYD quotes DC charging of up to 110 kW on the Dynamic and 150 kW on the Premium and Performance, and 7 kW on AC. Real charging speed depends on the charger and battery temperature. Plan a home or office charger if you can.

What are the alternatives?

BYD's own Sealion 7 is the SUV version at similar money, with more ground clearance and a bigger boot. Electric SUVs such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 are also worth a look if practicality matters more than pace. A BMW i4 costs a lot more but brings a premium badge. The Seal's case rests on equipment and performance for the price.
