BMW M2

BMW's smallest M car: a two-door, four-seat coupe with a 480 PS 3.0-litre straight-six driving the rear wheels. It is one of very few new cars in India still offered with a manual gearbox, and BMW charges the same for the manual and the automatic. It suits an enthusiast who wants a proper rear-drive sports car that can still do the weekly shop.

We would take the six-speed manual. It costs the same as the automatic, and a manual rear-drive straight-six is now rare at any price in India. Pick the automatic only if most of your driving is in city traffic.

Our verdict on the M2

The M2 is the most focused car BMW sells in India, and at about ₹1.07 crore ex-showroom it is also the cheapest way into a full M car with a six-cylinder engine. The engine, rear-wheel drive and the choice of a manual give it real character. The costs are what you would expect: a CBU import, low-profile performance tyres and a low, stiff stance, so bad roads and steep ramps need care. The rear seats are for children or short trips. If you want BMW pace with four doors and a softer ride, the M340i costs about ₹29 lakh less and is easier to live with. If you want an occasion car you will look forward to driving, the M2 makes more sense than its size suggests.

Good things

  • Rare combination of a manual gearbox, rear-wheel drive and a 480 PS straight-six.
  • Manual and automatic are priced the same, so you choose on preference, not budget.
  • Four seats and a usable boot for a two-door sports car.

Could be better

  • Low ride height and stiff suspension on Indian roads; BMW India does not publish ground clearance.
  • Rear seats are tight for adults.
  • Big performance tyres and M-specific parts make running costs high.

BMW M2: a manual, rear-drive M car that still has four seats

The M2 is the compact member of BMW's M family. Under the long bonnet sits the same 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six family used in larger M cars, tuned here to 480 PS. Power goes to the rear wheels only, through either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic. BMW India lists both at the same ex-showroom price, which is unusual and worth noting.

As a daily car it is more practical than it looks. There are four proper seats, though the rear pair suit children best, and there is a proper boot for weekend bags. The trade-offs are the ones you would expect from a car built for track days: a firm ride, wide tyres that pick up road noise, and a low nose. BMW India does not publish a ground clearance figure, but the car sits low, so steep driveways and tall speed breakers need a slow, angled approach.

Should I buy the manual or the automatic M2?

Both cost the same. The automatic is quicker on paper, gets 600 Nm against the manual's 550 Nm and is easier in traffic. The manual is the more involving car and the rarer one, which may help it hold value with enthusiasts. If you drive mostly in heavy city traffic, take the automatic; otherwise we would choose the manual.

Is the M2 practical enough to use every day?

It can be. The boot is usable and the cabin has the same screens and comfort features as other modern BMWs. The limits are the low ride height, the firm suspension and the tight rear seats. Treat it as a second car for most families.

How does it compare with the BMW M340i?

The M340i has four doors, all-wheel drive, more ground clearance and costs about ₹29 lakh less. It is the better all-rounder. The M2 is faster, sharper and offers a manual, so it is the one for a driver who values the experience over everyday ease.
