Our verdict on the i5

The i5 M60 is a remarkable piece of engineering: 601 PS, all-wheel drive, adaptive M suspension and rear-wheel steering in a quiet, refined executive saloon. It is also a lot of money at ₹1.20 crore ex-showroom, and it is a shorter, imported car with a less generous rear seat than the locally built i5 LWB, which costs about ₹40 lakh less. Range of up to 516 km on the WLTP test will drop at highway speeds and in summer, and 205 kW fast charging only helps where such chargers exist. Buy it if you drive yourself and want the fastest electric BMW saloon on sale here; if you are driven, the i5 LWB is the smarter purchase.

Good things

  • Huge, instant performance with all-wheel-drive traction.
  • Adaptive M suspension and rear-wheel steering make a big car agile.
  • Fast DC charging capability of up to 205 kW.

Could be better

  • About ₹40 lakh more than the roomier i5 LWB.
  • Range drops quickly when the performance is used.
  • BMW India shows a very limited colour choice online for this model.

BMW i5: electric M performance in an executive saloon

The i5 M60 xDrive is BMW's performance electric saloon, imported on the standard 5 Series wheelbase. Two motors, one on each axle, make 601 PS and 795 Nm. BMW India claims 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and a 230 km/h top speed. The battery's net capacity is 81.2 kWh, and BMW quotes 455-516 km on the WLTP cycle.

Chassis hardware is serious: adaptive M suspension Professional, Integral Active Steering that turns the rear wheels, and M Sport brakes with red callipers. AC charging runs at up to 22 kW and DC at up to 205 kW, which BMW says takes 10-80 per cent in about 30 minutes. The boot holds 490 litres. A full AC charge takes about 4 hours 15 minutes.

i5 M60 or i5 LWB?

The i5 LWB is longer, has far more rear legroom, claims 669 km on the Indian MIDC test (a different, gentler cycle) and costs about ₹40 lakh less. The M60 is much faster and sharper. Choose by whether you sit in the front or the back.

i5 M60 or the petrol-hybrid M5?

The M5 costs about ₹92 lakh more and is a full M car with a V8 plug-in hybrid. The i5 M60 is quieter, cheaper to run and nearly as quick in everyday use, but it is not as focused on a track.

How fast can it charge?

BMW quotes up to 205 kW on DC, with 10-80 per cent in about 30 minutes, and up to 22 kW on AC. Few public chargers in India deliver that much power, so plan for slower top-ups on the road.
