Our verdict on the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid

The AMG E 53 Hybrid is a very fast and complex executive saloon. Its 585 hp system output and claimed 4.0-second 0-100 km/h time put it in sports-car territory, while the 21.2 kWh battery allows short electric drives if you charge often. The trade-offs are weight and boot space: the battery cuts the boot to 370 litres, well below a regular E-Class. At ₹1.45 crore to ₹1.48 crore ex-showroom, it costs about ₹50 lakh more than the six-cylinder E450 LWB. Buy it if you want AMG performance with four doors and will plug it in. If you want rear-seat comfort, the E-Class LWB is roomier and much cheaper; if you want a pure driver's car, the CLE 53 Coupé is lighter.

Good things

  • Huge performance with all-wheel-drive traction
  • Can run on electric power for short trips
  • Fast 60 kW DC charging for a plug-in hybrid
  • Four doors and five seats

Could be better

  • 370-litre boot is small for the class
  • Heavy and complex powertrain
  • Electric range not published in India
  • Much dearer than the E-Class LWB

Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid: 585 hp with a plug

The Mercedes-AMG E 53 4MATIC+ is a standard-wheelbase E-Class with AMG's plug-in hybrid drivetrain. A 2,999 cc six-cylinder turbo petrol (449 HP) works with a 163 HP electric motor for a combined 585 hp and 750 Nm, sent to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic. Mercedes-Benz claims 0-100 km/h in 4.0 seconds.

The battery holds 21.22 kWh (usable) and charges at up to 11 kW AC or 60 kW DC; Mercedes quotes about 20 minutes for 10-80 per cent on DC. The car is 4,965 mm long with a 2,971 mm wheelbase. The battery takes space from the boot, which is 370 litres. India gets a Performance Edition at ₹1.45 crore and a Racing Edition at ₹1.48 crore ex-showroom, as listed in October 2026. Both have the same drivetrain.

Do I need to charge the E 53?

To get the most from it, yes. Without charging, it carries the weight of the battery without using it much. With a home or office charger you can do short runs on electric power. Mercedes-Benz India does not publish the electric-only range.

Performance Edition or Racing Edition?

The drivetrain is the same. Per the configurator, the Racing Edition adds a head-up display, AMG Driver's Package and Advanced Plus Package, but does not list the panoramic sunroof and hands-free access that the Performance Edition has. Compare both specifications with the dealer.

Is it comfortable for rear passengers?

It is a standard-wheelbase E-Class, so rear space is good but not limousine-like. Chauffeur-driven buyers will be happier in the E-Class LWB.

What are the running costs?

Higher than a regular E-Class. Expect costly performance tyres and brakes, high insurance, and specialist service for the hybrid system. Mercedes-Benz India does not publish fuel economy for this car.
