Mercedes-AMG GT Coupé

The Mercedes-AMG GT Coupé is AMG's own two-door sports car, now with all-wheel drive and a 4.0-litre V8. India gets the 585 HP GT 63 and the 612 HP GT 63 PRO, both able to reach 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds. It suits a buyer who wants a fast grand tourer usable on Indian roads, thanks to a front-axle lift.

Our verdict on the Mercedes-AMG GT Coupé

The AMG GT 63 is a fast, capable grand tourer. Its V8 and all-wheel drive give 0-100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, and active suspension, rear-axle steering and a front-axle lift make it easier to live with than most cars this quick. The cabin is well equipped, and the 321-litre boot takes weekend luggage. The GT 63 PRO adds more power, carbon-ceramic brakes, carbon aero parts and forged wheels for ₹60 lakh, which only makes sense if you plan track days. At ₹3.05 crore the GT 63 costs more than a base Porsche 911 (from about ₹2.11 crore in India) and the 911 is the benchmark for this kind of car, so drive both. Running costs, insurance and tyres will be high, and resale for AMG sports cars depends heavily on condition.

Good things

  • Very quick, with all-wheel drive traction
  • Front-axle lift and active suspension help on Indian roads
  • Usable 321-litre boot
  • Wide paint choice

Could be better

  • ₹3.05 crore before options; the PRO adds ₹60 lakh
  • Only two seats in India specification
  • MANUFAKTUR magno paints cost up to ₹11.5 lakh
  • High tyre, brake and insurance costs

Mercedes-AMG GT Coupé: a v8 grand tourer that can clear a speed breaker

The current Mercedes-AMG GT Coupé shares its platform with the AMG SL and now uses 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive. Both India versions use a 4.0-litre V8 turbo petrol and a 9-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT gearbox. The GT 63 makes 585 HP and 800 Nm, the GT 63 PRO 612 HP and 850 Nm. Mercedes quotes 0-100 km/h in 3.2 seconds for both, and top speeds of 315 and 317 km/h.

Standard equipment includes AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension, rear-axle steering, an electronic limited-slip differential, a front-axle lift system, a head-up display, Burmester sound, ventilated and memory front seats and a 360-degree camera. The PRO adds carbon-ceramic brakes, aero and carbon packages, forged 21-inch wheels and AMG Performance seats. The car is 4,728 mm long with a 321-litre boot.

Prices are ₹3.05 crore and ₹3.65 crore ex-showroom. The main rival is the Porsche 911. Mercedes-Benz India does not publish fuel-economy or ground clearance figures. AMG servicing is available at larger Mercedes-Benz dealers, and performance tyres and brakes are costly to replace. Insurance for a ₹3 crore sports car is a large yearly cost too.

GT 63 or GT 63 PRO?

The GT 63 is the sensible choice for road use. The PRO adds 27 HP, carbon-ceramic brakes, aero and carbon parts and forged wheels for ₹60 lakh. Take the PRO only if you will do regular track days.

Can it cope with Indian roads?

Better than most sports cars. The front-axle lift raises the nose for speed breakers and steep ramps, and the active suspension has a comfort mode. Mercedes does not publish ground clearance, so check your own driveway on a test drive.

AMG GT or Porsche 911?

The 911 starts lower, at about ₹2.11 crore, and has a wide range of versions. The AMG GT 63 offers V8 power and all-wheel drive as standard. Drive both; the choice is personal at this level.
