Our verdict on the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupé
The GLE 53 Coupé is a quick, well-equipped SUV with a smooth six-cylinder engine, air suspension and a large 655-litre boot. It looks more dramatic than a regular GLE and goes from 0-100 km/h in 5.0 seconds. The price is the problem: ₹1.52 crore is about ₹35 lakh more than a GLE 450d, which is roomier in the back and nearly as fast in real driving. Big 22-inch wheels also mean costly tyres and a firmer ride over potholes. Rivals include the BMW X6 and Porsche Cayenne Coupé. Buy the GLE 53 Coupé if its looks and sound matter to you; if not, the regular GLE is the more sensible way to spend the money.

Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupé: style and six-cylinder pace, at a price
The Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupé is based on the updated GLE Coupé. Its 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder turbo petrol makes 435 HP and 560 Nm, with a mild-hybrid starter-generator adding a short boost. Power goes to all four wheels through a 9-speed automatic. Mercedes quotes 0-100 km/h in 5.0 seconds and a 250 km/h top speed.
India gets only the Performance Edition, which comes with 22-inch AMG forged wheels, the AMG Night Package, AIRMATIC air suspension with adaptive damping, a selectable AMG Performance exhaust, a head-up display, MULTIBEAM LED headlamps, Burmester sound, a 360-degree camera and two-tone nappa leather. It is 4,944 mm long with a 655-litre boot.
The price is ₹1.52 crore ex-showroom. Mercedes-Benz India does not publish fuel-economy or ground clearance figures, and its data gives two different fuel tank sizes, so we have left those out. Expect high running costs from the tyres, brakes and insurance on a fast, heavy SUV. Rivals include the BMW X6 and Porsche Cayenne Coupé.
GLE 53 Coupé or GLE 450d?
The GLE 450d costs about ₹1.17 crore, has a more practical body and its diesel offers more torque. The GLE 53 Coupé is quicker, sounds better and looks sportier. Choose with your heart only if the budget is comfortable.
Is the coupé roof a problem?
Rear headroom is lower than in the regular GLE, and the rear window is smaller. Adults of average height fit; taller passengers should sit in it before you buy.
What does it cost to run?
Mercedes publishes no fuel-economy figure. A fast petrol SUV of this size will use far more fuel than a diesel GLE, and 22-inch performance tyres are expensive. Budget for these alongside the price.
