Our verdict on the X7
The X7 is a big, comfortable and very capable luxury SUV, and the diesel xDrive40d DPE at ₹1.32 crore ex-showroom is the one to buy. Its 720 Nm diesel suits a heavy car, it claims 14.31 km/l, and it already has seven seats, Merino leather and the illuminated grille. The petrol is quicker but claims 11.29 km/l. The M Sport versions are mainly about appearance. The X7's size is its weakness: at 5.2 metres long and 2 metres wide, city parking and narrow lanes need care. BMW India does not publish boot space, so check it with all three rows in use. If you rarely use the third row, an X5 saves about ₹35 lakh.
Good things
- Strong, efficient six-cylinder diesel.
- Three rows and genuine seven-seat capacity in the DPE.
- Very well equipped even in the cheapest version.
Could be better
- Very large for Indian cities.
- M Sport versions charge extra for mostly cosmetic changes.
- BMW India does not publish boot space or ground clearance.

BMW X7: three rows of luxury with a six-cylinder choice
The X7 is BMW's largest SUV, at 5,181 mm long and 2,000 mm wide with a 3,105 mm wheelbase. The xDrive40i uses a 3.0-litre turbo petrol inline-six with 381 PS and 540 Nm; the xDrive40d uses a 3.0-litre turbo diesel inline-six with 352 PS and 720 Nm. Both have an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.
BMW India sells three versions. The xDrive40d DPE is a seven-seater with Merino leather, the M Sport package and the illuminated kidney grille. The xDrive40i M Sport and xDrive40d M Sport add M bicolour wheels, and the diesel M Sport also gets BMW crystal headlights Iconic Glow. All versions use xDrive all-wheel drive.
Which X7 should I buy?
The xDrive40d DPE. It is the cheapest, has the most torque and the best claimed economy, and already includes leather and seven seats. The M Sport versions are for buyers who want a sportier look.
Is the X7 a proper seven-seater?
The DPE is sold as a seven-seater. The third row suits children and shorter adults on longer trips. Check the seating layout of M Sport versions with your dealer, as listings differ.
X7 or X5?
If you do not need a third row, the X5 is cheaper by about ₹35 lakh, easier to park and just as fast. The X7 is for larger families or owners who want more space and presence.
