Mercedes-Benz GLS
The GLS is Mercedes-Benz's largest SUV, a full-size seven-seater with a powered third row. India gets six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines with all-wheel drive, air suspension and rear-seat entertainment as standard. It suits a large family or a chauffeur-driven owner who wants the comfort of an S-Class in an SUV.

Our verdict on the GLS
The GLS is one of the most complete luxury family cars on sale. All versions get seven proper seats with a powered third row, air suspension, rear-seat screens, a rear tablet, chauffeur-position front seat and Burmester audio. The diesel 450d is our choice for its torque and range; the petrol suits buyers who drive less or prefer petrol. The Night Editions add black styling, black nappa leather, a head-up display and heated rear seats for ₹3 lakh, which is fair. Against the BMW X7 it is well matched on space and kit, and it costs less than a Range Rover. Boot space with all seats up is modest at 355 litres. If you only need five seats, the GLE saves around ₹38 lakh.
Good things
- Genuinely usable third row with electric folding
- Air suspension and rear-seat entertainment standard
- Strong six-cylinder diesel option
- Night Editions add useful kit for ₹3 lakh
Could be better
- 355-litre boot with all seats in use
- Large size makes city parking hard
- Night Editions limited to two paints
- No official fuel-economy or ground clearance figures

Mercedes-Benz GLS: seven seats with s-class comfort
The GLS is the updated second-generation model. India gets the GLS 450 with a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo petrol (381 HP, 500 Nm, mild hybrid) and the GLS 450d with a 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel (367 HP, 750 Nm). Both use a 9-speed automatic and all-wheel drive, and Mercedes quotes 0-100 km/h in 6.1 seconds for each.
It is 5,209 mm long with a 3,135 mm wheelbase and a 90-litre tank. Standard equipment includes seven seats with an electrically folding third row, AIRMATIC air suspension, MBUX rear-seat entertainment with two 11.6-inch screens and wireless headphones, a 7.4-inch rear tablet, Burmester sound, ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree camera and 21-inch AMG wheels.
Prices run from about ₹1.38 crore to ₹1.43 crore ex-showroom. Rivals include the BMW X7, Audi Q8 and Range Rover. The Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 is the more luxurious, rear-seat-focused version at ₹2.75 crore. Mercedes-Benz India does not publish fuel-economy or ground clearance figures for the GLS. Its size also makes a test of your parking space worthwhile.
Petrol or diesel GLS?
The diesel costs ₹2.2 lakh more, has 250 Nm more torque and should cover more distance per tank. For family road trips with all seats full, it is the better choice. The petrol is smoother and suits shorter city use.
Is the third row usable for adults?
Yes, for shorter trips. The long wheelbase gives more room than most rivals, and the seats fold and rise electrically. Boot space shrinks to 355 litres with all rows up, so pack soft bags.
Is the Night Edition worth ₹3 lakh?
Yes, if you like black or Alpine Grey. Beyond the styling you get black nappa leather, a head-up display and heated rear seats, which would cost more as separate options.
GLS or Maybach GLS?
The Maybach GLS 600 has a V8, executive rear seats and more luxury, but costs about ₹1.35 crore more and is focused on rear passengers. For a family that uses all seven seats, the regular GLS is the right car.
