Our verdict on the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S

The A 45 S is about one thing: speed. Its 421 HP engine and all-wheel drive give 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, which is quicker than many far costlier cars, and it still seats five with a usable 370-litre boot. The Aero Track Edition adds a big wing, forged wheels and Performance seats, plus a panoramic roof, Burmester audio and a 360-degree camera. Against that, the ride is firm, the cabin is that of an A-Class, low ground clearance needs care over speed breakers, and ₹87 lakh is a lot for a hatchback. For the same money a GLC 300 is roomier and calmer every day. Buy the A 45 S only if driving pleasure is the main reason you are buying a car.

The Mercedes-AMG A 45 S is the top performance version of the A-Class hatchback. Its 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder makes 421 HP and 500 Nm, and drives all four wheels through an 8-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT dual-clutch gearbox. Mercedes quotes 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and a 270 km/h top speed with the AMG Driver's Package fitted.

India gets the Aero Track Edition only. It comes with the AMG Aerodynamics Package, AMG Night Package, 19-inch cross-spoke forged wheels, AMG Performance seats, a panoramic sliding sunroof, MULTIBEAM LED headlamps, Burmester sound, a 360-degree camera and Active Parking Assist. The car is 4,453 mm long, with a 370-litre boot and a 51-litre tank.

It costs ₹87 lakh ex-showroom. Mercedes-Benz India does not publish fuel-economy or ground clearance figures for it. Insurance, performance tyres and brakes will cost more than on a normal hatchback, and a low front lip means you should check steep ramps at home and work. Buyers are few, so resale depends on finding the right enthusiast.

Both use a 421 HP 2.0-litre engine. The A 45 S is lighter and quicker; the GLC 43 Coupé costs about ₹12 lakh more but is roomier, rides higher and has adaptive suspension, making it easier to live with every day.
