If the budget is fixed, the base car already has the same engine, the glass roof, the big round screen, smartphone mirroring and a parking assistant. Nothing important is held back.

Our verdict on the Cooper S

The Cooper S is an expensive way to buy a small car, and you should go in knowing that. ₹44-56 lakh buys a four-seater with a small boot and a tight rear seat, when the same money buys a well-equipped midsize SUV or a BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe. What you get in return is a genuinely quick, sharp-handling hatchback with a well-finished cabin, a big standard equipment list and a brand that holds its value well. The 204 hp engine is the same in every trim, so the trims only change comfort and looks. We would buy the Classic. Skip the JCW Trim unless you want the styling; it does not add power.

Good things

  • Same 204 hp turbo engine and quick 6.6-second 0-100 km/h in every trim
  • Strong standard kit: glass roof, OLED screen, parking assistant
  • Easy to park and enjoyable to drive in the city
  • Mini has solid resale value and BMW-backed service

Could be better

  • Only 210 litres of boot and a cramped rear seat
  • Very expensive for the size; midsize SUVs cost less
  • Driver aids are basic warnings only, with no adaptive cruise control
  • JCW Trim costs more but adds no performance

Mini Cooper S: a quick, compact city car at a luxury price

Mini India sells the new-generation 3-door hatchback in one engine form only: the Cooper S, with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol making 204 hp and 300 Nm. It drives the front wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, reaches 100 km/h in a claimed 6.6 seconds and returns a claimed 16.82 km/l. The car is imported fully built.

The car is 3,876 mm long with a 2,495 mm wheelbase, so it fits into tight city spaces, but the rear seat suits children or short trips and the boot holds about 210 litres. Folding the 60:40 rear seat frees up much more room. Every trim gets a panoramic glass roof, the round 240 mm OLED touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a parking assistant with rear camera, and basic driver aids such as front collision and lane departure warnings.

The trims are Essential, Classic, Favoured and John Cooper Works Trim. Classic adds Harman Kardon audio, sport seats and keyless entry; Favoured adds a head-up display, electric memory seats and a massaging driver's seat; the JCW Trim adds sporty styling, a JCW steering wheel and black alloys, with the same engine.

Can a family use the Cooper S as its only car?

Not easily. It is a four-seater with a short rear bench and a 210-litre boot. Two adults with weekend bags is fine; four adults on a long trip is not. If you need one car for the family, look at the Countryman or a midsize SUV instead.

Which trim is the best value?

The Classic. It adds the features most owners notice every day, such as better audio, sport seats and keyless entry. The Favoured's head-up display and massage seat are pleasant but not essential, and the JCW Trim is about looks.

Is it expensive to run?

Fuel use is reasonable for 204 hp, with a claimed 16.82 km/l. Servicing goes through Mini's dealer network, which is smaller than BMW's, so check how far your nearest workshop is. Expect premium-brand prices for parts, tyres and insurance.

What are the alternatives at this price?

The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe gives you four doors and a bigger boot. For a quick, fun car with more space, a Volkswagen Golf GTI is the closest hatchback rival. If the Mini's appeal is mainly style, its own Convertible offers open-top driving for a few lakh more.
