Mini Cooper Convertible

The open-top version of the new Mini Cooper S, with the same 204 hp 2.0 turbo petrol and an electric fabric roof that folds in 18 seconds. It seats four in a pinch and carries little luggage. It suits buyers who want a stylish, quick weekend car and accept paying a premium for the open roof.

Our verdict on the Cooper Convertible

The Cooper S Convertible is a lifestyle purchase, and it is priced like one. You pay about ₹5 lakh more than the hatchback in the same Favoured trim for the folding roof, and you give up boot space and some rigidity. In return you get one of very few four-seat open-top cars on sale in India, and the roof works quickly, even on the move at low speed. The engine is the same strong 204 hp turbo across the range, so the Favoured is the sensible choice. The JCW Pack makes sense only if you value the sharper chassis. The Stardust Edition is paint, wheels and a roof graphic for another ₹1.4 lakh; buy it only if you love the colour. For a single family car, the hatchback or a Countryman is the better buy.

Good things

  • Quick, fully electric roof that works up to 30 km/h
  • Same 204 hp engine and brisk performance in every version
  • Well equipped as standard, including head-up display and Harman Kardon audio
  • Seats four, which few open-top cars at this price do

Could be better

  • Boot is just 215 litres, and 160 litres with the roof down
  • Rear seats are only for short trips
  • Costs about ₹5 lakh more than the Cooper S hatchback in the same trim
  • Limited colour choice in each version

Mini Cooper Convertible: open-air fun for four, with little room for luggage

The Cooper Convertible uses the same front-wheel-drive layout and 2.0-litre turbo petrol as the Cooper S hatchback, with 204 hp and 300 Nm through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. Mini claims 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds and 16.82 km/l. It is 3,879 mm long, a touch longer than the hatchback, and is imported fully built.

The black fabric roof is electric. It opens fully in 18 seconds at up to 30 km/h and can also slide back part-way to act as a large sunroof at any speed. With the roof closed the boot holds 215 litres, falling to 160 litres with the roof down, and the rear seat backs split 50:50 to carry longer items.

Mini India offers the car in the well-equipped Favoured trim, as a JCW Pack with adaptive suspension, larger brakes and JCW styling, and as the limited Stardust Edition in a special copper-grey paint with a Union Jack roof graphic. All share the same engine and core equipment, including the round OLED touchscreen, head-up display and parking assistant.

Is a convertible practical in Indian weather?

For many months a year, the roof will be open only in the mornings and evenings. With the roof closed it works as an everyday car with automatic climate control. Park in shade where you can, and ask the dealer to check the roof seals and drains at each service.

Is the JCW Pack worth the extra money?

If you drive on good roads and enjoy it, yes. The adaptive suspension and bigger brakes suit the engine well. The power is unchanged, though, so in normal traffic you will not feel much difference over the Favoured.

How much luggage can it carry?

Very little. 215 litres with the roof up is enough for two soft bags; with the roof down it drops to 160 litres. Fold the rear seats if you are travelling as a couple.

What else can I buy for this money?

The BMW M440i Convertible is far faster and roomier but costs much more. If you do not need an open roof, the Cooper S hatchback is the same car for less, and the Countryman gives you a usable family SUV.
