BMW M440i xDrive Convertible
The only convertible on BMW India's current price list: a four-seat soft-top convertible with a 392 PS 3.0-litre straight-six and all-wheel drive. It is quick without being as hard-edged as the M4, and the fabric roof folds electrically. It suits a buyer who wants a fast, comfortable convertible for weekends and evenings rather than a track car.

Our verdict on the M440i xDrive Convertible
The M440i Convertible is a niche car with a clear purpose. The six-cylinder engine is strong and smooth, all-wheel drive keeps it secure, and the electric fabric roof turns a highway run into an occasion. At about ₹1.11 crore ex-showroom you are paying a lot for the open roof: the M340i saloon has a similar engine for roughly ₹33 lakh less, with four doors and a bigger boot. India's heat, dust and short winter also limit how often the roof comes down. Resale for convertibles is usually softer than for saloons and SUVs. Buy it if top-down driving is the reason you want the car; otherwise the M340i is the smarter BMW.
Good things
- Strong, refined straight-six with all-wheel drive.
- Electric roof and four seats make it more usable than a two-seat roadster.
- Good equipment list, including adaptive cruise control and a 360-degree camera.
Could be better
- About ₹33 lakh more than an M340i with a similar engine.
- Smaller boot and tighter rear seats than the saloon.
- Convertibles tend to lose value faster, and India's climate limits roof-down time.

BMW M440i xDrive Convertible: a fast four-seat convertible for the weekend
BMW India lists this car as the M440i xDrive in its 4 Series M range. It is the convertible body, with an electrically folding fabric roof and four seats. The 3.0-litre turbo inline-six makes 392 PS and 540 Nm according to BMW India, and drives all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic. BMW claims 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds.
This is an M Performance model rather than a full M car, so the suspension is set up for fast road driving instead of track work. That makes it more comfortable than an M4, though it still sits low. The roof stows in the boot, so plan luggage around it on roof-down trips; a weekend for two is realistic.
How usable is a convertible in India?
The roof is best enjoyed early in the morning, in the evening and in the cooler months. In summer heat and city dust it will stay up most of the time. With the roof closed it is a quiet, comfortable coupe.
M440i Convertible or M340i?
Both use a 3.0 six with all-wheel drive. The M340i is a four-door saloon with more space and costs about ₹33 lakh less. Choose the M440i only if the open roof matters to you.
Is the M440i the same as an M4 Convertible?
No. The M4 is a full M car with a different engine tune and harder suspension. The M440i is softer and cheaper, and BMW India currently sells only the M440i as a convertible.
