Our verdict on the 5 Series Long Wheelbase

The 5 Series Long Wheelbase is a comfortable, spacious executive saloon that undercuts the 7 Series by more than a crore. The rear seat is the reason to buy it, and the four-zone climate control and ventilated seats suit Indian summers. The 2.0-litre petrol is smooth and quick enough, but there is no diesel or six-cylinder option, so long-distance owners may want to compare fuel bills. At ₹77 lakh ex-showroom it costs about ₹14 lakh more than the 3 Series Long Wheelbase, which is the smarter buy if you do not need the extra space. If you want electric, the i5 LWB costs ₹2.6 lakh more. For a family that is driven most of the time, this is one of the best-judged cars BMW sells here.

The 5 Series Long Wheelbase is the current-generation 5 Series with a stretched body for India. It is 5,165 mm long with a 3,105 mm wheelbase, which puts most of the extra length into the rear cabin. BMW India sells a single 530Li M Sport version at ₹77 lakh ex-showroom. It shares this long-wheelbase body with the electric i5 LWB.

Power comes from a 2.0-litre turbo petrol with 258 PS and 400 Nm, sent to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic. BMW claims 0-100 km/h in 6.5 seconds and 15.7 km/l, and the tank holds 60 litres. BMW India does not publish ground clearance, so check your driveway and usual speed breakers on the test drive.

530Li or i5 LWB: petrol or electric?

The electric i5 LWB costs ₹2.6 lakh more and has a claimed 669 km range. If you can charge at home and drive mainly in and between cities, it is worth a test drive. For long trips without charging plans, the petrol is simpler.

Is the 5 Series Long Wheelbase better than the 3 Series Long Wheelbase?
