Our verdict on the iX1 LWB

The iX1 LWB is the BMW electric car that makes the most sense for Indian families. It has the same long-wheelbase body and spacious rear seat as the petrol X1 LWB, a 490-litre boot, and a claimed 546 km on the MIDC test, for ₹54.7 lakh ex-showroom. That is ₹4.8 lakh more than the petrol car, a gap that home charging recovers over time. It is front-wheel drive and not especially fast, and real-world range will be lower than claimed in summer and at highway speeds. DC charging at up to 130 kW takes about 32 minutes from 10 to 80 per cent. If you cannot charge at home or work, the petrol X1 LWB is the easier choice.

Good things

  • Spacious long-wheelbase cabin and a 490-litre boot.
  • Claimed 546 km (MIDC) and quick DC charging.
  • Low running costs with home charging.

Could be better

  • ₹4.8 lakh more than the petrol X1 LWB.
  • Front-wheel drive and modest performance.
  • Real-world range will be well below the MIDC claim.

BMW iX1 LWB: a roomy electric SUV for the family

The iX1 LWB is the electric version of BMW's long-wheelbase X1, made for India. It is 4,616 mm long with a 2,800 mm wheelbase. A single 204 PS, 250 Nm motor drives the front wheels; BMW claims 0-100 km/h in 8.6 seconds, a 175 km/h top speed and 546 km on the MIDC test. It is sold in one M Sport version at ₹54.7 lakh.

The battery is listed by BMW at 64.8 kWh. AC charging runs at up to 11 kW (about 6 hours 45 minutes from empty) and DC at up to 130 kW (10-80 per cent in about 32 minutes). Equipment includes a panoramic glass roof, Digital Key Plus and 18-inch M alloy wheels. BMW offers an eight-year or 1,60,000 km battery warranty.

iX1 LWB or petrol X1 LWB?

The iX1 costs ₹4.8 lakh more but is quieter, quicker off the line and far cheaper to run with home charging. The petrol car is better if you often drive long distances where chargers are scarce.

How long does charging take?

BMW quotes about 6 hours 45 minutes for a full charge on an 11 kW AC wallbox, and about 32 minutes from 10 to 80 per cent on a 130 kW DC charger.

Is 546 km of range realistic?

It is a MIDC test figure. In real use, especially on highways and with the AC working hard, expect noticeably less. Most owners will charge at home overnight.
