Tesla Model Y
The Model Y is Tesla’s electric SUV and the main car it sells in India, now offered as a five-seat rear-wheel-drive Premium and a longer six-seat Model Y L with all-wheel drive. It suits tech-focused buyers who want a simple, minimalist EV with strong efficiency and access to Tesla’s Supercharger network, and who can work around a small service footprint and unpublished technical details.

Our verdict on the Model Y
The Model Y became far easier to recommend after Tesla cut the entry price to ₹50.89 lakh ex-showroom. The rear-wheel-drive Premium is quick, efficient, quiet and well equipped, with a clear interface and Tesla’s Supercharger access. The six-seat Model Y L adds space and range for families who need it. The concerns are practical. Tesla India does not publish power, battery size or a seats-up boot figure, Full Self-Driving is not available here, and the sales and service network covers only a few cities, so check how far your nearest service point is before you buy. Rivals such as the BYD Sealion 7, Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6 have wider service reach. If you live in a city Tesla serves and like its approach to software and charging, the Model Y RWD is a strong buy.
Good things
- Big price cut makes the RWD good value for an imported premium EV
- Efficient drivetrain with 500 km WLTP range on the base car
- Rear touchscreen and well-thought-out cabin with lots of storage
- Six-seat Model Y L option for larger families
Could be better
- Tesla India does not publish power, torque, battery size or boot volume
- Small sales and service network, limited to a few cities
- Full Self-Driving is not available in India
- Model Y L costs ₹11 lakh more than the RWD

Tesla Model Y: the simpler, cheaper way in
The Model Y is a midsize electric SUV and Tesla’s main model in India. Tesla now sells two versions: the five-seat Model Y Premium with rear-wheel drive at ₹50.89 lakh ex-showroom, and the Model Y L Premium, a longer six-seat version with dual-motor all-wheel drive, at ₹61.99 lakh. The earlier RWD and Long Range versions sold from 2025 have been replaced.
Tesla quotes 500 km of WLTP range and 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds for the RWD. The Model Y L is quoted at 681 km and 4.5 seconds. Tesla does not publish motor output or battery capacity in India. At a Supercharger, the RWD can add up to 238 km in 15 minutes at up to 175 kW; the Model Y L charges at up to 250 kW.
The cabin is minimal, with nearly every control on a 16-inch centre screen and an 8-inch screen for rear passengers. The car has an all-glass roof, heated seats, power-reclining rear seats, acoustic glass, a hands-free boot and phone-as-key access. Standard safety includes automatic emergency braking, lane departure avoidance and blind-spot monitoring. Ground clearance is 167 mm on the five-seater.
Where can we get a Tesla serviced in India?
Tesla’s sales and service presence in India is limited to a small number of cities. Before booking, check the distance to the nearest Tesla service centre and ask about mobile service. If you live far from one, a brand with a wider network may be easier to own.
Model Y or Model Y L?
Pick the Model Y if you need five seats; it is ₹11 lakh cheaper and still very capable. The Model Y L makes sense only if you regularly carry six people. Its longer body also gives more range and faster peak charging.
How far will the Model Y really go?
Tesla quotes 500 km WLTP for the RWD. Expect roughly 400 km in mixed Indian driving, less at sustained highway speeds. With home charging and the occasional Supercharger stop, that is enough for most families.
Does it come with self-driving?
No. Standard safety aids such as emergency braking and lane departure avoidance are included, but Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is not available in India. Do not pay extra for any self-driving promise until Tesla confirms it here.
