Mini Countryman
Mini's largest car, a five-seat SUV that keeps the brand's sharp handling and round-screen cabin. The Countryman C suits buyers who want a well-equipped premium compact SUV with a frugal 1.5 turbo; the JCW ALL4 is for those who want a fast, all-wheel-drive Mini and will pay heavily for it.

Our verdict on the Countryman
The new Countryman finally gives Mini a car with real rear space and a usable boot, and the Countryman C is well equipped for its price. The cabin is distinctive, but the round screen puts almost every control in menus, and 156 hp is modest for a car this heavy. Against a BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA or Audi Q3 the C is the most charming choice, not the most practical or cheapest to run. The JCW ALL4 is quick and grippy, but at ₹66.15 lakh it costs nearly ₹19 lakh more than the C and runs into far roomier rivals. We would buy the C, and only after a long test drive to check you can live with the screen.
Good things
- Countryman C is well equipped with no expensive packs to add
- Roomy rear seat and 505-litre boot for a Mini
- 190 mm of ground clearance handles Indian roads better than earlier Minis
- JCW ALL4 is genuinely quick with all-wheel-drive traction
Could be better
- 1.5 turbo in the C is only adequate for a 4.4 m SUV
- Most controls sit inside the round touchscreen
- JCW ALL4 price is close to larger, more practical luxury SUVs
- Smaller service network than BMW or Mercedes-Benz in many cities

Mini Countryman: a grown-up mini with a big price jump to jcw
This is the third-generation Countryman, built on the same platform as the BMW X1. It is longer, taller and roomier than before, and Mini India sells the petrol car in just two forms. The Countryman C uses a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo with 156 hp and 240 Nm. The John Cooper Works Countryman ALL4 uses a 2.0-litre turbo with 300 hp and 400 Nm, and drives all four wheels. Both use a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.
The Countryman C comes in the Favoured trim, so the ₹47.50 lakh price already includes a panoramic roof, head-up display, 360-degree camera, Harman Kardon audio and a massaging driver's seat. The JCW adds adaptive suspension, bigger brakes, a body kit and sports seats. Inside, both get Mini's 240 mm round OLED touchscreen, which runs most functions.
Mini quotes 190 mm of ground clearance and a 505-litre boot for the India-spec Countryman C, both useful figures for the class, and the rear seat now takes two adults in comfort. Safety kit includes front collision and lane departure warnings. The electric Countryman is sold separately with its own price list and is not covered here.
Is the Countryman C powerful enough?
For city driving and steady highway cruising, yes. With 156 hp and 240 Nm it is not quick, and overtaking with a full car needs planning. If performance matters, the JCW is the only fast Countryman, and it costs far more.
Is the JCW ALL4 worth ₹66.15 lakh?
Only if you want a hot SUV and value the Mini badge. It is fast and grips well, but the same money buys larger luxury SUVs with more space. It is a car for enthusiasts, not a value buy.
How does it compare with the BMW X1?
They share a platform. The X1 has a more conventional cabin with physical controls and a wider dealer network. The Countryman has more character and a more playful drive. Test both before deciding.
What will it cost to run?
Mini claims 15.92 km/l for the C, which is good for the class. Servicing goes through BMW Group dealers, which are fewer than Mercedes-Benz or BMW outlets in smaller cities. Check the distance to your nearest Mini workshop first.
