The CLE 53 is a well-judged performance coupe. Its six-cylinder makes 449 HP, Mercedes claims 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, and it comes with all-wheel drive, rear-axle steering, AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension, 20-inch wheels, a head-up display and Burmester sound. The 410-litre boot and four seats make it usable for trips. At ₹1.34 crore ex-showroom it costs ₹40 lakh more than the four-door C 43 and is close to the AMG E 53, which has more power and four doors. Choose the CLE 53 if you want a coupe and a six-cylinder; otherwise the E 53 is the stronger all-rounder. Budget for high tyre, brake and insurance costs.

The CLE is Mercedes-Benz's mid-size coupe, and India gets it in AMG CLE 53 4MATIC+ form. It is 4,853 mm long, 1,935 mm wide and seats four. CLE 53 or AMG E 53?

The E 53 is a plug-in hybrid four-door with 585 hp system output, and costs ₹11 lakh more. The CLE 53 is lighter, simpler and a coupe. If you carry rear passengers often, the E 53 makes more sense.

Is the rear seat usable?

It is a four-seater, but getting in through two doors takes effort and headroom is limited. Fine for children or short trips, less so for adults on long drives.

How does it cope with Indian roads?

Adaptive AMG RIDE CONTROL helps, but 20-inch wheels with low-profile tyres need care over potholes and speed breakers. Check whether your building ramp and regular roads suit a low car.
