Land Rover Discovery

Land Rover's full-size seven-seat SUV, sold in India only with a 350 PS 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel, air suspension and all-wheel drive. It suits a large family that wants a third row adults can actually use, serious towing and off-road ability, and a softer, more comfortable ride than a Defender.

  • S₹1.25 crore

If budget is tight, the S has the same 350 PS engine, air suspension, seven seats and off-road hardware. You give up comfort features, not capability.

Our verdict on the Discovery

The Discovery is still one of the most complete seven-seat SUVs on sale: a strong, refined 3.0-litre diesel, a third row that adults can use, air suspension and genuine off-road and towing ability. The catch is price. At ₹1.25 to ₹1.39 crore ex-showroom it costs about the same as a Defender 110 diesel, which many buyers will prefer for its image and resale, and more than a Volvo XC90 or Audi Q7. The cabin design is also showing its age next to newer rivals. Buy the Discovery if you need seven real seats, long-distance comfort and off-road ability in one car, and pick the Dynamic HSE rather than the special editions. If image and resale matter more than the third row, a Defender 110 is the more popular choice.

Good things

  • Smooth, strong 350 PS six-cylinder diesel with 700 Nm
  • Third row is usable by adults, unlike most rivals
  • Air suspension gives a comfortable ride and up to 285 mm of clearance off-road
  • 900 mm wading depth and 3,500 kg towing capacity

Could be better

  • Costs about as much as a Defender 110 diesel, which holds its value better
  • Diesel only, with claimed economy around 12 km/l at best
  • Ageing cabin design and the boot is small with all seats up
  • Land Rover's dealer and service network is thinner than the German brands' outside big cities

Land Rover Discovery: seven real seats and serious off-road ability

The Discovery is Land Rover's large family SUV. It is 4,956 mm long with a 2,923 mm wheelbase, and in India every version has seven seats, all-wheel drive, air suspension and the same D350 engine: a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo-diesel mild hybrid with 350 PS and 700 Nm, paired with an 8-speed automatic. There is no petrol version on sale here.

Prices run from ₹1.25 crore ex-showroom for the S to ₹1.39 crore for the Tempest edition. The S already has air suspension, LED headlights, a 14-way electric driver's seat with memory and an electric-folding second row. The Dynamic HSE adds Matrix LED lights, ventilated front seats and Meridian surround sound, the Metropolitan Edition adds electric third-row seats, four-zone climate control and a head-up display, and the Gemini and Tempest are styling editions with special wheels, roofs and paint.

Its strengths are space and ability. Adults can use the third row on shorter trips, the boot grows to about 922 litres with it folded, the air suspension lifts the car to 285 mm off-road and it can wade through 900 mm of water and tow 3,500 kg. Land Rover India's website already shows a 27MY Discovery with a Landmark trim that has no published price yet. Prices are indicative ex-showroom figures from Land Rover India's price list.

Discovery or Defender 110: which should I buy?

They cost about the same. The Defender 110 has the stronger image, a tougher look and better resale, and is the more popular choice. The Discovery has a roomier third row, a softer ride and a more practical cabin for families. If you will use all seven seats often, choose the Discovery. If you mostly carry four or five people, the Defender is likely the better buy.

Which Discovery trim is the best value?

The Dynamic HSE. It costs about ₹3.7 lakh more than the S and adds Matrix LED lights, ventilated front seats, a better driver's seat and Meridian surround sound. The Metropolitan Edition, Gemini and Tempest mostly add styling and a few comfort features that are harder to justify.

Is the third row really usable?

Yes, more than in most seven-seat SUVs. The Discovery's tall roof lets adults sit in the third row on shorter journeys. With all seats in use, though, the boot holds only about 172 litres, so long family trips need a roof box or careful packing.

What will it cost to run?

Land Rover does not publish an Indian mileage figure. The same engine is rated at roughly 11.8 to 12.5 km/l under European WLTP testing, so expect less in city traffic. Large wheels, air suspension and service at a limited number of Land Rover dealers add to running costs, so ask about service packages and extended warranty before you buy.
