Choose it if you need the third-row seat listed in its equipment, or want 544 HP. Otherwise the 450 makes more sense.

Our verdict on the EQS SUV

The EQS SUV is a large, comfortable electric luxury car with a long claimed range, and because it is assembled in India it costs less than you might expect for its size: ₹1.35 crore for the 450 and ₹1.49 crore for the 580, ex-showroom. The 450 is the one we would buy. It has the same 118 kWh battery, air suspension, rear-axle steering, Hyperscreen and rear-seat entertainment as the 580, a longer claimed range, and enough performance. The 580 makes sense mainly for its extra row of seats. Real-world range will be well short of the 800-plus km claims, DC charging tops out at 200 kW, and resale for large luxury EVs is uncertain. With home charging, it is a calm and capable family car.

Good things

  • Long claimed range and big battery
  • Very comfortable rear seat with entertainment
  • Air suspension and tight turning circle for its size
  • Locally assembled, which keeps the price in check

Could be better

  • Real-world range will fall well short of the claims
  • Very large for city parking
  • Long-term resale of luxury EVs is uncertain
  • Heavy, at close to 2.9 tonnes

Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV: a large luxury EV made in India

The EQS SUV is Mercedes-Benz's large electric SUV, assembled at its Chakan plant near Pune. It is 5,136 mm long with a 3,210 mm wheelbase and has a 645-litre boot. Both versions use a 118 kWh usable battery and two motors for all-wheel drive: the 450 makes 360 HP and 800 Nm, the 580 makes 544 HP and 858 Nm.

Charging is up to 22 kW AC and 200 kW DC; Mercedes-Benz quotes 31 minutes for 10-80 per cent on DC. Standard equipment includes the MBUX Hyperscreen, AIRMATIC air suspension with adaptive damping, rear-axle steering of up to 10 degrees, ventilated rear seats, an MBUX rear tablet and rear-seat entertainment, Burmester 3D sound, head-up display and a 360-degree camera. Ex-showroom prices are ₹1.35 crore for the EQS SUV 450 and ₹1.49 crore for the 580, as listed by Mercedes-Benz India in October 2026.

How far will it go on a charge?

Autocar India reports ARAI claims of 820 km for the 450 and 809 km for the 580. Mercedes-Benz India does not publish a figure. Indian heat, highway speeds and air-conditioning use will cut real range substantially, so plan long trips with charging stops.

450 or 580?

Unless you need the third-row seat that the 580's equipment list includes, the 450 is the better buy. It has the same battery and comfort features, and costs ₹14 lakh less.

How long does charging take?

At a 200 kW DC charger, Mercedes-Benz quotes 31 minutes for 10-80 per cent. On a 22 kW AC wallbox, a full charge takes about 12 hours by its figures. Most owners will charge overnight at home.

Is it too big for Indian cities?

It is over 5.1 metres long and nearly 2 metres wide without mirrors. Rear-axle steering gives a 10.1-metre turning circle, which helps, but tight parking will still need care.
