Land Rover Defender
Land Rover’s square-cut off-roader comes to India as the three-door 90, the five-door 110 and the long 130, with the OCTA as a separate performance flagship. A 2.0 petrol opens the range, but the 350 PS 3.0 diesel is the version most buyers should look at; the supercharged V8s and the OCTA suit people who rate speed and sound above fuel bills.

Our verdict on the Defender
The Defender is still one of the most capable off-roaders you can buy in India, and the 110 diesel is the one we would choose. At ₹1.36 crore it has the torque for loaded highway runs and steep climbs, and it uses far less fuel than the V8s. The 2.0 petrol saves about ₹29 lakh but feels stretched in a car this heavy. The X trim adds cleverer suspension and a nicer cabin for ₹8.1 lakh, which is fair if you go off-road often. The V8s and the OCTA are about noise and pace; they cost a lot to fuel and insure, and the OCTA at ₹2.42 crore sits in Range Rover territory. Check how near your closest dealer is before you buy, as the network is concentrated in larger cities. If you want comfort over mud, a Range Rover Sport is the softer choice.
Good things
- Genuine off-road hardware: twin-speed transfer box, air suspension on most versions, deep wading ability
- The 3.0 diesel offers strong pulling power with sensible WLTP economy for the size
- Well-equipped from the base trim, with panoramic roof, cooled seats and surround camera
- Three body lengths, so you can buy only as much car as you need
Could be better
- Petrol V8s and the OCTA claim only about 7-7.6 km/l on the WLTP cycle
- The 2.0 petrol base model is underpowered for a 2.2-tonne SUV
- Side-hinged tailgate and spare wheel add length and make kerbside loading awkward
- Imported, so prices and servicing depend on a thin dealer network outside big cities

Land Rover Defender: choose the body first, then the engine
The Defender is sold here in three body lengths. The 90 is a short three-door, the 110 is the familiar five-door, and the 130 stretches the rear overhang to make room for a third row. The 110 and 130 share a 3,022 mm wheelbase and the 90 uses 2,587 mm. Every version has an 8-speed automatic and a twin-speed transfer box, so the real choice is how much space you need and which engine you can live with.
Engines run from a 300 PS 2.0 turbo petrol in the 110, through the 350 PS 3.0 diesel mild hybrid, to the 5.0 supercharged V8 in 425, 500 and 525 PS tunes. The OCTA sits apart with a 635 PS 4.4 twin-turbo V8, wider tracks, 250 mm of ground clearance and a 1,000 mm wading depth. Prices run from ₹1.07 crore to ₹2.62 crore ex-showroom.
Trims are simple. X-Dynamic HSE brings the panoramic roof, Windsor leather, heated and cooled seats and a 3D camera. X adds Adaptive Dynamics, an active rear differential and Kvadrat fabric. The Trophy Edition is an X-Dynamic HSE diesel in yellow or green with black wheels and roof. V8 and OCTA are the performance versions.
Should I buy the diesel or a V8?
For most owners, the diesel. It makes 700 Nm, which is more than any of the supercharged V8s, and Land Rover's WLTP figures put it at about 11.5 km/l against about 7 km/l for the V8. The V8 is quicker and sounds special, but you pay for it at every fuel stop and the price rises by ₹11 lakh or more.
Is the 2.0 petrol worth saving money on?
It is the cheapest way into a Defender at ₹1.07 crore, and it suits light city use. But 300 PS and 400 Nm in a vehicle this heavy means it works hard on hills and when loaded, and it is no more economical than the diesel. We would stretch to the diesel.
Which body suits a family?
The 110 fits five adults and a large boot, with an optional 5+2 seat layout. The 130 adds proper third-row space and can be specified with up to eight seats, but it is 341 mm longer and costs more. The 90 is a fun second car, not a family car: rear access is tight and the boot holds 297 litres.
How expensive is it to run?
Expect premium-brand service bills, costly large tyres and high insurance on an imported car. Dealers and workshops are mainly in metro cities, so check how far your nearest one is. The diesel keeps fuel costs reasonable; the V8s and OCTA do not.
