Our verdict on the M5

The M5 does something few cars can: it carries five people in comfort and still delivers 727 PS through all four wheels. The plug-in hybrid system adds electric-only running for short trips and fills gaps in the V8's response. The cost is high in every sense: ₹2.12 crore ex-showroom, a heavy car, and the running costs of big tyres and brakes. BMW India's 49.75 km/l claim depends on a charged battery; on long drives you will be using the V8 most of the time. The i5 M60 is about ₹92 lakh cheaper and nearly as quick on the road. Buy the M5 if you want the full M experience with a V8 soundtrack and can charge at home to make the hybrid worthwhile.

Good things

  • Huge performance with all-wheel-drive traction.
  • Proper five-seat saloon with a usable rear seat.
  • Plug-in hybrid allows quiet electric running on short trips.

Could be better

  • Costs about ₹92 lakh more than the electric i5 M60.
  • Heavy, and the claimed fuel figure needs regular charging to mean anything.
  • BMW India does not publish boot, tank or electric range figures.

BMW M5: a V8 plug-in hybrid with five seats

The current M5 combines a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 with an electric motor. BMW India lists 400 kW (544 PS) from the engine and up to 145 kW (197 PS) from the motor, for a combined 535 kW (727 PS) and 1000 Nm. M xDrive all-wheel drive is standard, and BMW claims 0-100 km/h in 3.5 seconds with a 250 km/h top speed.

An 18.6 kWh battery can be charged at up to 11 kW on AC, which BMW says takes about 2 hours 15 minutes from empty. Owners who charge daily can do short trips without starting the V8. The paint list is long, with ten colours including M-specific and BMW Individual shades. BMW India sells a single version of the car.

Do I need to charge the M5?

You can drive it without charging, but then the V8 does all the work and fuel use will be far from the 49.75 km/l claim. Charging at home lets you use electric power for short trips.

M5 or i5 M60?

The i5 M60 is electric, quieter and about ₹92 lakh cheaper. The M5 is more focused, has a V8 and does not depend on charging for long trips. Choose the M5 for the full M experience.

Is the M5 comfortable enough for daily use?

Yes. Adaptive suspension softens the ride in comfort mode, and the cabin is as roomy as a regular 5 Series saloon. It is a big, heavy car, so tight city parking needs care.
