Our verdict on the S-Class

The S-Class remains the benchmark luxury limousine, and the S 450 e adds near-silent electric driving in town. The rear executive seat, massage, Chauffeur Package, rear screens and Burmester 4D audio make it a fine car to be driven in, while air suspension and rear-axle steering keep it comfortable and easy to place. The Launch Edition is the one to buy; the Manufaktur Edition charges ₹18 lakh for AMG Line looks and exclusive paints. The hybrid battery cuts the boot to 345 litres, and you need home charging to get the benefit. The BMW 7 Series costs ₹1.95 crore and is the main rival; the BMW i7 is the all-electric option. If you want more rear space and Maybach detail, the Maybach S 580 e costs ₹3.10 crore.

Good things

  • Superb rear-seat comfort and equipment
  • Plug-in hybrid allows quiet electric driving in town
  • Air suspension and rear-axle steering standard
  • Fast 60 kW DC charging for a hybrid

Could be better

  • 345-litre boot, as the hybrid battery takes space
  • No diesel or non-hybrid option
  • Electric range not published in India
  • Manufaktur Edition is ₹18 lakh more for mainly cosmetic changes

Mercedes-Benz S-Class: the benchmark limousine goes plug-in hybrid

The S-Class sold in India is the updated long-wheelbase model, offered only as the S 450 e plug-in hybrid. A 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo petrol (326 HP) works with an electric motor (163 HP) for a system output of 435 hp and 680 Nm. It drives the rear wheels through a 9-speed automatic and does 0-100 km/h in 5.7 seconds.

The 21.96 kWh battery charges at up to 11 kW AC (full in 2.25 hours) or 60 kW DC (10-80% in 20 minutes). Standard equipment includes an executive rear seat with Chauffeur Package and massage, rear-seat entertainment, the MBUX Superscreen, Burmester high-end 4D sound, AIRMATIC suspension, rear-axle steering, DIGITAL LIGHT and an augmented-reality head-up display. The car is 5,304 mm long with a 345-litre boot.

The Launch Edition costs ₹2.20 crore and the Manufaktur Edition ₹2.38 crore, ex-showroom. Rivals are the BMW 7 Series and BMW i7. Mercedes-Benz India does not publish electric range, fuel-economy or ground clearance figures, so ask the dealer how far you can drive on electricity in your daily routine.

Do I need to charge it?

To get the benefit, yes. Charged at home, it can cover short city trips on electric power. Driven without charging, it works as a regular petrol hybrid and you carry the battery's weight for little gain.

Launch Edition or Manufaktur Edition?

The Launch Edition. The Manufaktur Edition adds AMG Line styling, 20-inch AMG wheels, exclusive paints and interior trim for ₹18 lakh. Rear comfort and equipment are otherwise the same.

S-Class or Maybach S-Class?

The Maybach is 180 mm longer, has first-class rear seats with folding tables, rear comfort doors and a stronger 585 hp hybrid with all-wheel drive. It costs ₹90 lakh more. The S-Class already offers excellent rear comfort for most owners.
