Our verdict on the EX30
The EX30 is the easiest way into a new Volvo in India at ₹41 lakh ex-showroom. It is quick, with 272 hp from a rear motor, and the claimed 480 km range is enough for most weekly use with home charging. The standard kit is generous for the price: panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera, Pilot Assist and automated parking. The trade-offs are real, though. The rear seat is tight, the boot is small at 318 litres, and every control runs through the single centre screen, with no display in front of the driver. If you need family space, a Hyundai Ioniq 5 or BYD Sealion 7 gives more room for similar money. If you mainly drive in the city and want a small, safe and premium electric car, the EX30 makes sense.
Good things
- Strong performance from the 272 hp rear motor
- Generous standard kit including panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera and Pilot Assist
- Compact size makes it easy to park and drive in cities
- Claimed 480 km range is enough for most weekly use
Could be better
- Rear seat legroom is tight for adults
- 318-litre boot is small, and the front trunk is tiny
- No driver display; speed and most controls sit on the centre screen
- Larger electric SUVs from Hyundai, Kia and BYD offer more space for similar money

Volvo EX30: a small, quick electric Volvo for the city
The EX30 is Volvo’s entry point in India. It is 4,233 mm long, a little longer than many compact SUVs, but built as a premium electric car rather than a family hauler. Volvo sells one version, the Ultra, with a single rear motor and the Extended Range battery, at ₹41 lakh ex-showroom. That makes the choice simple, as the only decisions left are colour and interior theme.
The motor makes 272 hp and 343 Nm, which Volvo says gets the EX30 from 0-100 km/h in 5.3 seconds. The 69 kWh battery is rated for up to 480 km. On a fast DC charger, a 10-80% top-up takes about 28 minutes, and an 11 kW AC wallbox charges it fully in about eight hours. Real-world range will be lower than the claim, especially at highway speeds.
Inside, Volvo has removed almost every button. One 12.3-inch screen in the middle handles the speedometer, climate, media and settings, with Google built-in for maps and apps. Some buyers like the clean look, others find it fiddly while driving. Book a long test drive, including some time on a busy road, before you commit.
Is the EX30 big enough for a family?
For a couple or a family with one small child, yes. Rear legroom is limited, and Volvo’s own figure for the boot is 318 litres with the seats up. If you regularly carry four adults or lots of luggage, a larger electric SUV such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 will suit you better.
How long does it take to charge?
Volvo quotes about 28 minutes for 10-80% on a fast DC charger, and about eight hours for a full charge on an 11 kW AC wallbox. Most owners will charge at home overnight and use public fast chargers only on longer trips.
Should we buy the EX30 or a larger EV for the same money?
Buy the EX30 if you value a compact size, quick performance and a premium badge, and you drive mostly in the city. If space and comfort for the whole family matter more, a bigger electric SUV at a similar price gives more room for the money.
