Porsche Cayenne Electric

The Cayenne Electric is a new, all-electric Cayenne with a longer wheelbase than the petrol car, a 113 kWh battery and charging at up to 390 kW. India gets the 442 PS Cayenne Electric and the 1,156 PS Turbo. It suits a family that wants a large luxury SUV, can charge at home, and wants the newest Porsche technology.

Our verdict on the Cayenne Electric

The Cayenne Electric is the more modern of the two Cayennes, and the one we would choose if home charging is possible. The longer wheelbase gives more rear legroom, the boot is bigger, and the battery and charging hardware are the best Porsche offers. The base version, at ₹1.77 crore, is the sensible buy: 4.8 seconds to 100 km/h and the longest claimed range. The Turbo's 1,156 PS is remarkable, but it costs ₹2.28 crore and Indian roads give you few places to use it. The catch is charging. Very few Indian public chargers can supply anything close to 390 kW, so the headline 16-minute figure will rarely apply. Rivals include the BMW iX and Mercedes EQS SUV, which are more comfort-focused. If you cannot charge at home, buy the petrol Cayenne.

Good things

  • More space than the petrol Cayenne, with a front trunk
  • Long claimed range and very fast DC charging capability
  • Air suspension and electric rear seats as standard
  • Base version is already very quick

Could be better

  • Few Indian chargers can use its full 390 kW
  • Turbo is ₹50 lakh more for performance you will rarely use
  • Heavy car: expect costly tyres
  • Starts about ₹26 lakh above the petrol Cayenne

Porsche Cayenne Electric: the bigger, newer cayenne

The Cayenne Electric is sold alongside the petrol Cayenne rather than replacing it. It uses a new electric platform with an 800-volt system, two motors and all-wheel drive. Porsche India lists two versions. The Cayenne Electric makes 408 PS, or 442 PS with Launch Control, and the Turbo makes 857 PS, or 1,156 PS on overboost.

Both use a 113 kWh (gross) battery. Porsche quotes WLTP ranges of up to 641 km for the base car and 622 km for the Turbo, and DC charging at up to 390 kW for a 10-80% charge in about 16 minutes. The car is 4,985 mm long with a 3,023 mm wheelbase. Boot space is 781 litres, and there is a 90-litre front trunk.

Prices are ₹1.77 crore for the Cayenne Electric and ₹2.28 crore for the Turbo, ex-showroom. Running costs per kilometre are low if you charge at home, but tyres for a heavy, powerful SUV are expensive, and Porsche service is only in larger cities. Plan for a wall-box charger at home before delivery, because the car is at its best when it leaves home fully charged every morning.

Cayenne Electric or petrol Cayenne?

If you can charge at home, the Electric is the better car: roomier, quicker, newer inside and cheaper to run per kilometre. It costs about ₹26 lakh more than the base petrol Cayenne. Stick with petrol if you drive long distances where chargers are scarce.

How long does it take to charge?

Porsche claims 10-80% in about 16 minutes on a 390 kW charger. Most Indian public DC chargers deliver 60-120 kW, so expect closer to an hour. On an 11 kW home charger, a full charge takes most of a night.

Is the Turbo worth ₹50 lakh more?

Only if you want the fastest SUV Porsche makes. The base car already reaches 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds and has more range. The Turbo adds HD-Matrix headlights, adaptive sports seats, Bose sound and Sport Chrono, which you can partly add as options to the base car.

How does it compare with the BMW iX or Mercedes EQS SUV?

The Porsche is the better car to drive and charges faster. The BMW costs less, and the Mercedes puts more focus on rear-seat comfort. If you value comfort over handling, look at the rivals.
