Lexus RX
Lexus’s mid-size luxury SUV, sold in India only as a petrol hybrid with all-wheel drive. The RX 350h is the calm, efficient choice for families who want a plush five-seater; the RX 500h is a much quicker turbo hybrid for those who enjoy driving. It suits buyers who value refinement and a long warranty over a third row of seats.

Our verdict on the RX
The RX is a polished, quiet SUV with a cabin that feels well made, and the 350h hybrid suits Indian city driving well. It comes very well equipped from the start, with cooled seats, a panoramic roof and a full set of driver aids. The weak points are space and value against rivals: the RX is a strict five-seater, and at over ₹90 lakh it overlaps with the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE, which have larger dealer networks. Lexus also does not publish an India mileage, boot or ground clearance figure, so ask for a test drive on your own roads. We would buy the 350h Exquisite; the 500h is fun but hard to justify. Prices are indicative ex-showroom.
Good things
- Smooth, quiet hybrid with all-wheel drive as standard
- Generous standard kit including cooled front and rear seats
- RX 500h is genuinely quick and agile for its size
- Long vehicle and hybrid battery warranty
Could be better
- Five seats only, while some rivals at this price offer seven
- Lexus publishes no India mileage, boot or ground clearance figure
- Small dealer network compared with Mercedes-Benz and BMW
- RX 500h costs about ₹20 lakh more than the 350h

Lexus RX: two very different hybrids under one badge
The RX sits between the NX and the LX in the Lexus SUV range. It is 4.89 metres long with a 2,850 mm wheelbase, putting it up against the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90. Unlike the Audi and Volvo, it has only two rows of seats, which leaves more room for the rear passengers and luggage.
The RX 350h pairs a 2.5-litre petrol engine with front and rear electric motors for 181 kW, about 246 PS, through an e-CVT. The RX 500h is a different car to drive: a 2.4-litre turbo petrol, a six-speed automatic and a strong rear motor give 273 kW, about 371 PS, with rear-wheel steering and adaptive dampers for sharper handling.
Both get a 14-inch touchscreen, head-up display, panoramic roof, 360-degree camera, ventilated front and outer rear seats, eight airbags and Lexus Safety System+ 3 driver aids. The 350h can be ordered with a 21-speaker Mark Levinson system; the 500h F SPORT+ adds sports seats, exclusive styling and 21-inch matte-black wheels.
RX 350h or RX 500h: which should I buy?
Buy the 350h unless you love driving. It is smoother at low speeds, should use less fuel and costs about ₹20 lakh less. The 500h is far quicker and handles better thanks to rear-wheel steering and adaptive dampers, but most owners in traffic-heavy cities will not use that extra ability often.
Is the Mark Levinson option worth ₹3.43 lakh?
Only if you listen to a lot of music in the car. The standard Lexus audio is decent, and the rest of the equipment is identical. If you plan to keep the car for many years and care about sound quality, the upgrade is easier to justify than most paid options.
Can the RX replace a seven-seat SUV?
No. The RX has two rows only. If you need occasional third-row seats, the Volvo XC90, Audi Q7 or Mercedes-Benz GLE in seven-seat form are the rivals to test. The RX’s advantage is a more spacious second row and a cabin built around four or five adults.
What does ownership look like?
Lexus offers an 8-year or 2,00,000 km vehicle warranty and an 8-year hybrid battery warranty, plus prepaid service packages. Hybrids are usually gentle on brakes. Check the distance to your nearest Lexus workshop, as the network is small and focused on large cities.
